hi all, me mum was using my car yesterday and put £15 of petrol in my deisel. car stalled and defo not gonna even try to turn it over.
i have a 2.5 dt P38. the light was on for the desiel, and then she put £15 of petrol in it. what do i do get her running again. can i suck the petrol out of the tank and then fill the tank up fully with desiel and add a bit of cleaner to it will that work, or do i really need to strip it all back???

if you can syphon the petrol out and refill that'd be ya best option undo the fuel lines and crank over to get petrol out of IP & fuel lines. and cross ya fingers & hope it runs ok afterwards.

Less than 15 lt you put in, so fill up with diesel, change the diesel filter first, nice easy job, screws on and off, or just empty it out, and crank it over, after you dun that, will take a few turns but will start and run fine with that amount of petrol in it, it will take about 10 to 15% of a mix fine

Oh and tell her it cost you £500 to put it right....then she wont drive it again!!

if not doing it yourself i see the aa do a fuel assist service for draining down not sure how much. saw one in a garage the other day

First get your self a new filter. Filter is located inboard of EAS valve block and pump box. Remove rear pipe from filter. In fuse box remove relay 12. (Fuel pump relay) with ignition OFF take a wire from battery + to terminal 5 on relay female socket. This will start pump and remove contents of tank into a suitable recepticle. After that get some diesel remove filter and fill new one with fresh diesel, screw on. Replace pipe removed earlier. Crank engine it may cough and splutter a little but should clear fairly quickly.

Cant upload the pic i got but i have attached a crappie diagram of it.

Appears about correct, it should have a black pipe going into it from bulkhead and a clear one from it to fuel injection pump. If you really need to ask these questions it maybe better to get someone who knows more to do the job for you.

er no, im capable of doing the job, i dont work on these cars, or desiels, as long as i know where the filter is then i know how to sort it.

thanks.

Ok good luck. But it is rather amazing that someone who works on cars should have to ask where a fuel filter is. It is a fairly easy extrapolation.

most of my work is done on small ****ter cars. filters are usual all in the same place, but not on this, i thought that was the filter, i was just checking with you lot, is that a crime, thats why i am on a forum because i am unsure and wanted advice, its what this place is for.

anyways, job half way done, pump about 5 litrs out so far but batt has died on car, will finish tomorrow,

cheers for the advice all.

Mike.

No problem Mikey. But to be brutaly honest most of the problems on here arise from people thinking they know what there doing and not having a clue. Why has battery died. Did you not follow my instructions for draining? Running pump in that way should not flatten battery.

the thing is the batt is crap, really old, holds charge but if engine aint running it doesnt hold out for long. but yesterday while mum was waiting for truck to get the car she had the hazards going and cos she was waiting for 4 hours to be picked up she got bored and put the radio on.
but i have noticed today, the clear tube from the filter to the injector had a tiny crack in it, was having a look at it and the poxi thing snapped off so need the plastic bit that conntct to the filter. any idea how much these things are??

No idea sorry. But when you get a new one after draining fuel and fitting filter leave end that fits to pump loose. Then get someone to do trick with relay that should bleed fuel to this union. When all air is out nip it up.

Hey wammers that is sh*t hot advice, i've been repairing cars for years and always used a spare fuel pump hooked up to a battery to pump a tank clean. I can't believe i never thought of doing it your way, so simple. Just goes to show your never too old to learn, even when you think you know it all.
