It does work at present but not very cold.

Really? When I got mine done about 18mth ago I was asked which refrigerant I wanted, I didn't know, he checked and said it was the old stuff and just filled it..Getting the gas seems to be a slight issue?
There are a few websites that give you the low down on how to convert to the new gas. I did some investigating last year in an attempt to repair the air con on my '93 jeep which has the R12 refrigerant. I don't recall it being difficult or pricey.

As an aside just before Christmas I found a re-gassing unit in the skip at work, it fired up ok but without refrigerant I couldn't guarantee it worked so I put it on eBay for spares and got 480 quid for it - bloke drove from the other side of the country to collect it too. Got to be my best skip find yet!
From what I read there was no need to change the compressor. I think the issue is lubrication and you have to add some to the older systems.Somebody mentioned that I could maybe change the plumbing and compressor for a later model. Think the R12 was banned around 94-95 ish ?
