Afternoon, am newish to here (said my hellos in the hello bit the other day!). Am looking to buy a tax exempt landy as a cheap weekend fun mobile. Have started to have a good look around and liking the idea of buying a tidy one and paying bit more for it, rather than getting a 'project'. Have scoured the net and egay so far, and a trawl of this forum tells me that I should be able to get a half tidy one for anything from £1000 to about £1500? Any suggestions to help with my selection? I am after a diesel swb as well if that's any help, and am located in Cornwall, but will travel for the right one..... help please!!! :doh:

Series 3 should be your best choice i would think. a tidy example of an early 90 is probably just out of reach.
enginewise, many conversions have been done to series vehicles. originals are 2.25 and 2.5 n/a. you will also see dihatsu 2.5/2.8's, 200tdi's and others.
original spec engines will prob be cheaper, if you can find a 200tdi, then thats your best chance.
Series owners/nutters/rivet counters will be along shortly to put me straight

Tax Exempt will be a Series 1,2 or Very Early 3's. For 1 - 1.5k you are not going to get a good series 1. So It is a 2 or a 3, As standard these were 2.25 petrols or Doozils, The petrol is very fuel heavy and not that quick, The Doozil is Slow and very noisey! But as Griff said many engine conversions have been caried out, A 200Td would be your best bet.

It was someone's project car.
I bought it because it was sitting there looking lonely.
He did heaps and heaps to it. Must have spent a couple of thousands.
Galv chassis parabolic springs even, brake servo, loads of dials and switches, comes with new door tops to fit, hardtop with windows (needs new rubbers), CB set, accessory battery and charger in the back, loads of stuff.
But still there's plenty of little things to do to finish it off.
I Had a good 2.5 TD fitted and Fairey overdrive. Runs beautifully!
In total it owes me a bit over £2,200 but I might haggle a little .... but not a lot. It's a historic that needs an owner with the time and skills and patience to finish it off. That isn't me - no time!

Overpriced and probably has a rusty chassis, else the guy wouldn't be selling it.
My little one has a new GALVANISED chassis - that's over £1,100 alone!

I currently have a short list of 5 from fleabay i am looking at!! Luckily i am in North Wales so i doubt i will be bidding on the same as you!! CharlesY's motor does sound great but more than i can haggle with the mrs for!!
I've got a 2.5 TD in a series lightweight on the original gearbox.
Pick 'n Mix - you can fit more or less anything to anything else.
You just need the right size hammers - great big ones!
