I don’t think so either, seems to be mostly Chevies that need shimming according to Google. The starter is a new Bosch unit, so I’d like to think that’s good. There was a bracket/shield type piece ( can’t find it on the parts diagram) that the mech wasn’t quite sure where it went ( different guy reassembling to disassembling ! ), so I’ll check that out tomorrow. Have you ever had any issues when fitting new starters to old engines? Ta

only the odd poor starter, you dont need the support bracket or shield but some do have them

Thanks, that’s slightly reassuring. I’ll check the bracket and bolts to make sure everything looks ok, or just get the mechanic back to sort it!

the only issue with the support bracket if fitted that secures to the block is that if your not careful you can exert pressure on rear of starter

Right then, having done a bit of driving about today I'm now really concerned that the mechanic has screwed something up! Starter is fine now, that seemed to fix itself after a couple of starts, what isn't ok anymore is the drive itself! I've now got a new noise that's difficult to explain and pulling away in 1st and then 2nd is very rough, I mean rough! Driving at cruising speed is definitely not as smooth as it used to be either, there's definitely some extra noise and vibrations. I've got everything crossed that it's something as simple as the engine mount being too tight after reinstallation, but I don't know if that would cause such severe symptoms. What worried me when he was trying to extract the starter from underneath was the way he jacked the engine up, one engine mount was removed and then the engine raised by 4 or 5 inches. This looked a bit extreme at the time, but he assured me that it was acceptable. I'm now thinking he fooked something up in the clutch/flywheel department - the clutch feels notchy now too.
He's coming out for a look tomorrow, but I've got no idea how things will go... to be continued...

I did the starter on my 200Tdi a couple of years ago, can't remember having to shift the engine.
It did take a bit of time and plenty of cussing, but that's normal cos I is a numpty.

Wear in a little!! What a muppet. Sounds like a sticking solenoid. I had this on a brand new Bosch unit years ago, went to start my 300tdi Disco and the starter stayed engaged until I disconnected the battery - I was running about like a loon looking for a 10mm spanner to pull the battery cable! I was also further annoyed as by the time I got the cable off the battery was beginning to die and it had just been hammered to death.
The mistake here was that I tried to switch off the engine to see if the starter might stop - it didn't, then it was cranking over the engine - I should have switched the ign. back on and let the engine restart - but when your trying to get a spanner from a locked garage in the pitch black you are not thinking it all through. At least when the engine was running the starter was not loaded as the ring-gear was spinning the starter sprocket on over-run.

Thankfully it seems to have rectified itself, which is a relief, as I’ve already busted one starter this week - the starter on the work’s Massey stayed on ( much like in your scenario ), by the time I’d found a spanner and disconnected the battery there was smoke pluming out from the starter!
To their credit they came out this morning to have a look at the Landy again. They got rid of a lot of the new vibration by adjusting the engine mount nut and moving the exhaust manifold clamp away from the chassis. She still feels sluggish compared to how it was before, so I’m going to check all the intercooler/turbo pipes later, as these were all removed for the starter to go in.
