Ok so might aswell do a little "hello" first, I'm Reece and I'm from Essex, I have been part of many forums, shooting, focus Rs , ST forums etc and there ggreat places to get advice and meet new people. please don't think I have joined just for this post it was always going to happen but sadly Iv spent most of my week trying to repair it rather than talk about it lol.

so I'm pretty good with my hands but don't really have to much machanical knowledge. I have a new defender, I have grown up on farms with them, used them daily, and know what they are all about and I finally bought my dream car! A 2004 defender td5.I love there problems and there little ways and the simplicity of them but this has a problem that's ****ing me off!

So it just cuts out!? it's done it while driving, and a few times in the morning, I turn the key and I notice I don't get all the lights up on dash? coil and engine light don't come up leaving just oil and battery. it turns over strong but won't fire. this can be sorted by removing the relay and putting it back. I have removed and cleaned up the earth and added some copper grease and same problem this morning. I have fully serviced it and changed fuel filter and that hasn't helped (although I don't think it's a fuel problem)

I have noticed a slight oil patch under drivers seat and have read about oil running into the Kim so will be giving that a clean up today with electrical spray. What am I doing wrong? I have read to swap the relays around see if it helps? get new relays? buy a loom? Drop it at a garage!? because it's becoming worrying to drive, it got me to and from London all week with no problems but they have kicked off again this week. Any help would be appreciated
 
If you think it is the loom, then as you say pull the plug and check for oil in there.

If it does have oil then changing the injector loom will help, but as I understand it the harness for the Defender is longer than the D2 so will take longer to purge itself btw the head and the ECU.

Another thing you could do , is try and find someone local with a proper diagnostic unit for a defender TD5.

Have you tried swapping relays with another one with the same rating / working. Then again relays are not expensive if you were to buy a replacement.

Start by the simple route of the fuel line. It runs first okay but cuts out. Could be a weak fuel pump, blocked return fuel line. Kinked in feed fuel line. Split or cracked fuel line causing air to enter.
Next will be Electrics. Open the battery bay and look for oil leaks around the loom and the ecu orange plug. Engine bay is there oil leaking from the front injector loom connector.

open the ECU at your own risk to check for oil contamination.

Then clean every week until it stops showing oil.

Still not sure why it should affect your bulb check starting lights tho.

The cover over the engine will expose the injector loom where you will see the five conntectors. At the front will be a round plug with an o ring you can unplug the main loom from. Now you will need to replace the injector loom first then cleanout the ecu loom also to breakdown the oil contamination both ends. There will be a proper outlay on the search section and pictures on what to look out for. Also being a common issue for TD5s a good search on the web will give you a youtube and correct loom replacements.
 
Engine light is part of diagnostic circuit, the bulb has possibly been removed to stop a fault showing prior to the sale.
Generally there are only 2 faults which light the diagnostic bulb, one is the throttle potentiometer, the other is the crank sensor which would stop the car dead,
I'd say clean ecu plug, replace injector harness, and have fault codes read with a compatible fault reader as td5 ain't OBD compatible

Do the EML and glow plug lights ever light up in normal use?

Engine light is part of diagnostic circuit, the bulb has possibly been removed to stop a fault showing prior to the sale.

That would depend on if they ever work, when the fault is not present.

Hi mate replace the injector loom

Bring your Ecu indoors and give the plugs a good clean...

Leave it upright in an airing cupboard for a night or two

Also as your there messing about on the throttle there's a plug

Unplug it and spray brake cleaner or contact cleaner

Don't forget to clean injector top plugs
 
Unfortunately the oil pools up in the ECU connector all along the bottom row, I think pin 5 is the fuel pump relay, so right in the mini oil slick. If you're lucky the ECU will be dry inside but the only way to be sure is to have a look. The harness though will def. need replacing
