I realise this will probably result in some p!ss taking but...

I've just noticed my car's creating shiny oily puddles underneath in the rain.

Is this petrol or engine oil, would you think?

:D

Would engine oil just be thick black spots, and petrol turn multicoloured? Or do they both do the same?

Petrol will smell, most likely of petrol:p, and will evaporate quite quickly. If you have a persistant oil slick then you have an oil leak.

Just have to work out where from now:D

Right so far I've got lick it or sniff it? :D

I'm going to look rather strange in the office car park doing either :D

Oo, oo, i've got another one. Try setting light to it.

Unfortunately, an oily film could be either.

Well as your CP says you have a 300Tdi it's hardly likely to be petrol.

Chuck a thin wide bit of wood under the car see which end is leaking could even be the seal that links up to the diff sweating
It would save you licking the floor at least

Easy way to work out where the slicks coming from , does it say LandRover anywhere on your disco / defender / range rover / freaklander / epuke ?? Just saying thats all !!

Pre drilled oil leaks , as one of my old work mates said !

Id say neither...and if its in the rain its probably just washing crud off the engine/body.

:D

Should have said, this is a car, not my disco.

Actually the gf's car, costs a third of the disco price to get to work in that.

Anyway, it had evaporated when I got back, so petrol it is!

It looked out of place sitting on my disco's engine oil patch :D
