Hi Guys, I set off to do a bit of shopping this morning and got 1/4 mile and the oil light came on, plenty of oil so assumed the oil pump is the issue, I slowly drove 1/4 mile home again and found the brakes very poor also.
Question is could the 2 be related or am I looking at 2 separate issues. I'm guessing the lack of oil pressure effects the brake servo.
Any advice would be much appreciated

OK,

First thing to be aware of, and this is a horror story, But the TD5 has been known to have an issue with the oil pump bolt, I would advise not running the engine until you have checked it over correctly, or had someone else do it. Do a search for oil pump bolt on here and also have a look here. http://www.discovery2.co.uk/Oil_pump_bolt.html
Sorry to be a scare monger but better safe than sorry. Hopefully it is not this that has caused your problem.

Thanks Nielly, Yeh I read up on the bolt and guess the sump will have to come off to check even though it's done 150k miles. Just thinking if the oil pressure and brake servo are somehow connected it rules out the oil pressure switch.

Have you got a download of the rave manual? It may help if you need to trouble shoot.
Iirc, the vac pump isattached to the alternator. Maybe worth checking to soo if anything is awry there.

Have you changed the oil recently ? and what grade did you put in ?

+1. When I got my disco earlier this year the chap told me he'd just changed the oil but not what grade. The oil light would flicker on and off on the motorway until I changed it for the proper spec stuff. No such issue since. Assume the lower viscosity stuff just doesn't get picked up properly by the pump.

A common thing with early D2 brakes, are they better for a double pump ?

Edited to add : do you have ABS on this one ?
 
It is due an oil change soon, changed it around 8k miles ago and both oil filters.
Never had any probs with oil light before, it just came on suddenly after a few hundred yards and the brakes started to fade just afterwards.
Car has ABS and they do work but I am sure the servo is not helping.

Sounds like two issues and a dose of coincidence ...

Any brake fluid loss ?

What grade oil did you fill it with ?
 
One thing to note is at the same time there was a loud noise that sounded like someone breaking up concrete or something but I put that down to building work nearby,
beginning to think it may have been the pump breaking up now.

Guess I better finish my brew and get my tools out.

Plenty of brake fluid, can't remember what grade of oil but I got it from my local landy mechanic so will be right.

Best be checking that oil pump then ...

And to be on the safe side consider changing the flexi brake pipes, they are prone to soften and pop after a while ...
 
well that was fun.
Found a few bits in the sump but I think the pump survived.

Looks like the bolt came loose and sheered off.

Once I get it runing again I will tackle the brakes.

surprised it took 150k miles but then it wouldn't be a landrover if didn't throw in the odd surprise.
