Started my 1998 td5 and the oil light stayed on. Have checked the oil pressure 0. have been advised that it could be the oil pump bolt. could somebody kindly tell me what this is and were would i start looking for it and is it easy to repair? if it isnt the bolt what else could it be? Would APPRECIATE some feedback cheers

On early engines either the wrong type or no thread locking compound was used resulting in the oil pump sprocket bolt coming loose. Only way to sort it is as JM says remove the sump, clean up the sprocket bolt threads, and retighten using loctite or similar. Dont run the engine as TD5s quickly destroy themselves with no oil pressure. Ask me how I know?

Thanks guys! Shifty i have already seen your thread thats why its not been started since. Thanks again. On with the task today will let you all know the outcme.

Should be ok if caught quick enough. I've done quite a few and they were caught in time, I've has to fit a fee oil pumps though so be sure to take your time and check it's just the bolt come out and not damaged the pump

Sump off sprocket in good condition the bolt is fubar a newone been ordered from land ranger stockport cant believe land rover main dealers dont carry a common fault part. All cleaned up and ready to reassemble monday/tuesday. thanks guys!

worth a check on your mains big ends only takes a few mins with no oil to trash the crankshaft (mine went 51 plate td5 )but mine came on going down motorway , stopped quick as I could , removed sump and the oil pump was wearing into sump , removed conrod bearings was too late marked crank , another crank and bearings was needed ,, hope ur lucky ,,,

I have changed & locktighted at least 2 oil pump bolts on my previouse td5's just for piece of mind-both were sound !

Undoing the sump and dropping the sump 20cm gives you plenty of room to do this as appose to trying to wiggle the bloody thing off & out over the front axle!
