Does anybody know the symptoms of the oil pump pressure relief valve sticking?

I have recently had a turbo reconditioned because it was letting oil past the seal and after less than 5k miles it is leaking again so I am thinking that if it is not a faulty seal then it is the oil pump pressure relief valve. There is no evidence of back pressure and I have cleaned the oil catcher inside the top of the rocker cover.

PS. What are they like to get off and overhaul. I have looked at rave and they seem easy enough but am always open to any decent tips :)

How do you know the turbo seal is leaking oil in the turbo pipes is normal. Don't remove the oil pump unless you know what you are doing and have the special tools needed to replace it and the timing kit or you will have a world of pain. It won't be the relief valve. If you think they are easy to get to and repair you are living in dreamland. It's big job.

You can't miss that it is leaking; if you take the pipe off the top of the turbo and dry off the rim; give it a little revs and the rim is full of oil again (you can do this over and over again). If it ain't the pressure relief valve then it must be a faulty turbo seal, there's no other explanation.

Had a problem with a pressure relief valve on an XJ40 a year or so ago. The pressure was so high when rev'ed that it blew the oil filter sealing ring out of it's housing and dumped the oil. Get the pressure checked and if it's ok send the turbo back.:)

Unless you have had duff turbo refurb and it does happen, the oil is sucked in from the cam cover and is quite normal. Have you checked your air filter? Have you washed out your intercooler? What year is you car?

Yes I washed out the intercooler when the turbo was done last time. I only replaced the air filter around 5K miles ago at the most. I've also washed out the oil catcher.

It is a 1997 car.

Shortly after I fit the turbo I had to re tighten the turbo banjo above the advised torque because it was p!55ing out even with new washers on. I never thought anything of it at the time, but now I am wondering if it was telling me something. Come to think of it, I also had a problem with the oil filter seal leaking but I re-seated that and it hasn't leaked since.

If I do pull the front end to bits I am going to change the timing chains and tensioners while I am at it (seems pointless not to after 240k miles). My engine has good compression and does not smoke, save for a tiny bit on kickdown which is almost certainly coming from the turbo. I know that the chains need doing, but would like to wait until I get some more cash and some other projects out of the way first.

I can borrow kit to do the manual pump timing, but other than various pullers, are there any other specialist tools needed?

Is that a thing that normal garages can do or would it have to be dealer?

Yes one to centralise the oil pump. There are several special tools required. I will be amazed if the pressure relief valve is stuck closed, open yes, closed no.

Don't know the set up on the R/R but the Jag p/r valve runs in a drilled steel sleeve which is pressed into the aluminium pump casting. In my case the sleeve was loose and lifted with the valve so the relief drillings were still blocked off and pressure was not being allowed to divert back to the sump
