My series 3 oil pressure light won't go off , oil is between L and H , running OK , I've recently replaced the pressure switch which up until now has been OK , if I rev at a standstill it goes off until I take foot off pedal , any ideas ? , is there a way to clean the switch ?
 
check the pressure using a proper gauge ,they screw into the oil pressure switch hole, it may be a duff switch but equally poor pressure which if the case wants looking at asap
 
Very worrying after all you've had done to your engine Neil - as james has said get a proper gauge asap, in fact don't drive it until you have, good luck
 
I had that on a freshly built 200 TDI with a new switch fitted the same time.
Stuck the old switch back in and all ok.
Switch came in a clear unmarked bag so no idea of manufacturer but it was cheap @£1.99.
 
I changed switch a couple of weeks ago , only put old one in bin yesterday , luckily dug it out and put it back on and now light works fine , new one was britpart so hopefully getting a new one from original supplier for nothing , if it fails again I'll buy yet another one (not Britpart ) so I'm 100% happy its the new crappy part at present and nothing more serious , thanks for advice
 
Result Neil. I thought I had a knackered wiper switch. Smoke came out the switch. Last week when I was changing out the radiator I accidentally ****ted the wee electric water pump. Hey presto it's all working again. Moral if it ain't broke don't fix it .

i wouldn't worry about the warning light on, as if you have a oil pressure gauge then if that reads ok then thats good, dont bother with a light as they only tell you if the oil is at a very low pressure and by then its not looking good, but with a gauge you can sometimes tell if you are low on oil as it will jump up and down and stay below 40 psi, i binned the light years ago, i use a gauge and when the gauge reads say around 30 or less then i know i need to top her up with more oil, but the oil should be checked weekly or maybe even monthly depending on how much oil the engine consumes, which like many old rover type engines will use oil, i can use up-to 5 litres of oil between oil changes and thats because of the damn oil filter and craapy valve stems.

Bloody lights back on , no noises , all seems well apart from light , have changed switch back and it still stays on , this seems too much of a coincidence to me that it started having issue when I put a new switch in ,
when I changed switch back to new one after trying old one again oil was pouring out of the hole so im assuming thats a good sign , should I top oil up to H , will that make any difference ? I will try and locate a gauge and measure pressure asap , ive almost had enough! (again).
 
Are you using thread sealant ? If so this could be buggering up the switches ability to earth to the engine block.

No I'm not but thanks for the suggestion , I have noticed that new britpart switch is leaking from point when spade connector attaches so that's rubbish , I've put old one back on (again) and when I start engine the light goes out for a short while but then flickers back into action , could I have 2 dodgy switches ? I have no funds to do any more work so I'm hoping that this is it.
 
You've just payed for a partially rebuilt engine. 2 weeks later the oil pressure light comes on. I would be taking it straight back!
 
I might have sorted this , I tapped the switch with a hammer to see if it was stuck , when I say tapped I mean tapped , I didn't go all Friday the 13th on its ass with a sledgehammer, its was really light tapping , light comes on now only when key is first turned and stays off when engine starts , I have taken wire off the switch and light stays off at all times so the switch is doing something , only trouble is the one that's on now is the original Landy one , britpart one was less than useless , will order a half decent one and give it another go .
 
As said already why don't you just put a decent oil pressure gauge in instead of the switch and then you'd know what the pressure actually is? :confused: It's got to be cheaper than another rebuild
 
im using an electronic oil pressure gauge, i had a mechanical one but didnt trust it as it leaked once, and the last i want is a broken oil gauge line.
 
OK , All done , it was the switch (massive relief) , Britpart sent me another one without argument so im assuming they know that they are hit and miss parts. Ive put that one on and all is good , thought I was going to have row with them over sending me another one so I has already ordered another one from somewhere else so now ive got a spare!, ill look into getting a gauge , Lesson
learnt , if its a Britpart part dont assume it works before going on to more expensive options.

believe me I'm Bad Company this morning got onto the motorway and light has come back on Could possibly be another crap Britpart switch but what are the odds , will get a pressure test done , not happy
