Hi ladies and gents, sorry for the lack of a proper introduction just got a bit of a problem with a Disco V8, the oil warning light flickers on and stays on at tickover but dissapears after 1000 RPM, there is plenty of oil in the engine and it hasn't been burning any, the car revs and sounds just like my old RR classic did and seems to drive ok and runs fine on both petrol and LPG, if it was damaged would it have broken fairly quickly as oposed to running fine but flickering on at tickover?, should I change the oil for a thicker type?, I'm hoping and praying that the engine isn't buggered.

Any idea what the oil pumps are like to change on these?, I can't imagine their too easy been a V8 etc.

I had this problem with my discovery 300tdi, I changed the oil pressure senor ( located just above the oil filter), cost me about £5 - easy job and well worth ruling out.

The V8 engine tends to have a low oil pressure at tickover anyway, this is one of the reasons it has a large oil capacity.

The light can be caused by nothing worse than a faulty oil pressure sender switch so that is worth changing anyway. Make sure the oil pressure relief valve (on the oil pump) is working correctly, they can stick.

Give the car a service changing the engine oil and filter. A good quality 15W40 oil should be fine. Do not bother with synthetic oil or any with a lower viscosity.

Other common causes of low oil pressure are a worn oil pump or worse case worn main bearings in the engine.

A Haynes manual is worth the investment. Good luck and don't worry.

It's starting to sound noiser and worse now and upon a look and a listen from a reputable LR/RR indie, he seems to think the engine is buggered, would it be worth getting a new one or just breaking the car for spares?, to say I'm ****ed off is rather an understatement:mad: , going to get myself a good TDI Classic next time I think, until I can get an L322 V8 anyway.

People worry far too much about oil pressure.

Fill the thing up with Ovoline Tractor Universal and if the oil light goes out at any speed more than tickover, drive on.
