hi guys this is my first post so nexcuse me if im being cheeky asking advice already, but here goes.
started me 300tdi as normal fine, but the oil light stayed on, thought i would drive to the garage and get some more oil. after roughly 3/4 miles she just died on me, opened the bonnet took off the oil cap and she was smoking like a volcano, checked the oil levels she had plenty, got her towed home, she is now sat on the drive looking sorry for herself, she will start but still has the oil light on,any of you chaps have any ideas???
cheers in advance, matt

no noise or smoke fella, oil light is till permanently on, any ideas on remedies then fellas?, cheers matt

No noise then no bearing problems. as stated by TMHM a few post above replace the pressure switch, only a fiver max, if still the same come back, although you shouldn't have smoke coming out of the oil filler.

maybe a failed oil pump, or blocked strainer and the oil pick up pipe, inside the sump. Or even the pick up tube has dropped off inside the sump. Am i right in thinking also that the oil acts as another form of engine coolant. Lastly wondering if the breather pipes are blocked hence the smoking

i will try the oil pressure switch this weekend, but would that make the car stall if the switch i faulty?, as i said there was no noise just the old girl just cut out so rolled her gracefully to the verge, cheers matt

"would that make the car stall" No... but loss of compression would i.e worn piston rings/cylinder bore that would give you the "smoking like a volcano".

chaps there was no smoking from the exhaust, the only smoking oil was when i took off the oil filler cap, the oil also smelt a bit burnt, cheeers matt

My money is on a failed oil pump and the engine was just starting to cook, might not be terminal if no bad noises.

right then chaps how much of a job is it for me to replace the oil pump? im going to attempt that as the engine did start ok the following day, but didnt run it for very long, thats why i thought she stalled and not seized. any info would be great, cheers again matt

oil pump is on the rear of timing case driven by crank direct ,but if run with low or no pressure bound to be some damage

guys i have looked at the manuals and is the pump just a couple of gear looking things?i think im going to chane all the oil related bits ie pump strainer switch etc,has anyone ever changed an oil pump?, cheers matt
