Silly question
The pump only leaks on cold start and from top plate that's got 4star screws. Has any one ever tightened then and leak stopped or is that a bad idea if there torqued to setting????

I had exactly the same problem. Up where we are, I think the salt gets in and corrodes between the pump’s three ‘cylinder heads’. I rebuilt my pump with a £20 or £30 kit, but it leaked again. I had to resurface/clean the heads and it worked the second time. It’s not a loose bolt problem.

You don’t need to buy a whole new pump, either get the old one refurbished or get a kit from Darwen Diesels and do it yourself.

It's 100% leaking from top plate on hp fuel pump where 4star head screws are

My pump is leaking from the same plate. There are 3 identical plates on the HP pump.
I started to strip mine out yesterday, but the weather stopped me, after I spent an hour looking for my 17mm Allen socket. :(

I ordered this kit as it contains both types of top seals and the end plate seals.

I ordered a 're con Bosch
Am going to get a old unit and see how hard it is to fit seals
All get it tested to see if all good. Use to work in oil company working in assembly
So use to working with this items and shear screws but been years since I stripped and 're sealled parts.
Just curious if I can plus can take time working with it

There's a video on the site I linked which shows exactly what is done and how. The seals in the Bosch pump are easy to change. ;)

The pump seals last 120K miles or about 10 years. I personally can't see the point in keeping a spare, that will only degrade in storage. ;)

Yep, Remove the nut from fuel pump spindle,Screw in the collar first then the center piece(this holds the sprocket in place) then remove pump

I just bookmarked this thread as I'm pretty sure I'll be doing the refurb sometime.
Thanks guys for all the links and info. ;)

I'm doing mine at the weekend, and the tailgate window cables. I rebuilt the starter last night, so I won't be stripping that out again soon.
These BMW TD4s are a pain by comparison to my previous V6, which is still running faultlessly 4 years after selling it to the mother in law.
