Fluid's started leaking out of the drivers side rear axle, as the inside of my wheel is coated in a tie-die pattern of the stuff.

Its definately not brake fluid as its sticky-er than DOT-4 and my brake fluids not gone down. I pretty sure its EP90 (smells and feels like it)

I think need a replacement oil seal then for where the axle casing meets the bearing/wheel hub, does anyone know the part number?

It's for discovery axle

depends a little on age of axle ,inner seal is a grease seal ftc4785,on both pre ja will have an outer seal frc8222 to keep oil out of bearings ,later use ftc5268 in stub axle to keep oil out of bearings ,could be a sing of play in wheel bearings or blocked breather,rtc3511 and frc8221 can be used in place of inner seal ftc4785 and are oil seals with garter springs

will have a goosey at the breather first, no play in bearing, went trailing ons sunday and scrutineer would have pulled me up on it.

Here we go

sorted this:

  • either axle stub gasket had completely disintgrated or was never fitted. New on fitted (#1)
  • replaced hub oil seal(#7)
  • bearings were found to be rusty, as were racers, so those came out and replaced.
  • gasket around half-shaft to hub fitted.(#6)
  • cos the bearings had rust on them, I drained to axle oil and put in some fresh.
I also COMPLETELY rounded an M10 bolt taking the axle stub off, so took one from work.

took her for a 7mile spin, no more leaking, jobs a good-un!

Cause of all this: breather was blocked with a combination of rust and mud! bloackage cleared with wd-40 and lung power......putoooie!!
