Hi guys,
I have Freelander 2002 1.8 petrol . i just realised theres a oil leak from left hand side of the cam shaft oil seals n you can see the cam shaft rotating from outside , is this normal?
also its drinks fuel and seems like bit over revving .
anyone got the same problem?
Any ideas please ?
Thanks

The 1.8 isn't exactly economical, I get about 25mpg combined. If your seals are leaking then it may be time to replace them, search around there is bounf to be a guide to doing it without havingt to take the cams out.

Do you mean right hand end? Any how very easy to replace the seals.

Thanks guys,
yes its right hand side. also idle speed gauge goes up and down when car stationary.
Thanks

There should be plates over the ends of both cam shafts - keeps em nice and clean and retains the seals.

i cant see any plate mate, i can see the cam turning from outside on right hand side of the engine.
Thanks

As DD3 says there should be bolt on covers one the end of the head. If not then it's a sure sign that a monkey has been in there messing about :(
As for the erratic idle, going by the fact that half the engine is'nt there I'd be checking the breather pipes and stuff just in case one is split or missing ?
