We have a 1996 LandRover TDI.The vacuum bump on the block is leaking oil again.This will be the second time i have replaced it in 180000 Miles.The unit costs about $4oo Aus.Is there any way of repairing this unit,or do i trek off to bendix westinghouse and part with my hard earned dosh? Regards....AL
 
LR asked WABCO very nicely to make sure that the pump is not 'serviceable'.

With a bit of effort you can fit an alternator from a rice-burner which has a vacuum pump on the back, rather like the Denso TD5 alternator. If you investigate the local scrap yards you can also get an alternator with more power at the same time. You can take an oil feed to the pump from the turbo feed on the tdi.
 
Yea,G,Day Jim.We had thought of your suggestion,also the collusion between LR and Wabco(perish the thought) Will try and find a substitute one way or another.BTW what is the worst scenario if we keep driving the vehicle as is? Run out of brakes etc.etc. .........AL`
 
They either leak oil or don't work, or both at once. If it stops working you will need a very strong right leg to stop! This is because disk brakes have no self-servo effect like drums.

Talking of collusion, the ZF p/s pump fitted to the 300tdi is also not serviceable, yet all other ZF pumps of the same age are. I think there is some sort of deliberate action happening here. When I tackled ZF on this one they refused to comment.

G'Day,I'm back.After a bit of a look around,i found a place that either reconditions vacuum pumps or gets someone to do them .I couldn"t get that out of them.However,as i said in a previous post, new $395au....Recon $225au.Bit of difference? Well I wish them the best of luck with this one. I have taken one apart and there are lots of plastic bits in there. Make sure you get a good guarantee...
 
Well, the change over unit is on and running for about a week,and Lordy,Lordy....no oil leaks YET! As i have said previously, I cant find out what was replaced,the only visible sign of entry is the new grub screws that are tapped and placed around the casing.We can but hope,Regards.......AL
