Well today just keeps getting better !!
I recently found out that my defender is fitted with a 200tdi disco engine, which was the reason for the bodged exhaust pipe from the turbo to the down pipe, as this is where it is blowing.
Anyway to cut a long story short I managed to get hold of the correct exhaust pipe from the turbo and set about trying to fit it.
Whist I was doing this I noticed black oil all over the pipe from the back of the turbo,so I thought I would remove it and have a look.
Once it was removed it was worse on the inside it was well and truely soaked, and there was a fresh puddle of oil on the bottom lip of the turbo:frusty:

My fears are that the turbo is buggered, or could it be the inter cooler?

Any advice would be muchly appreciated

Oh and it does puff a lot of black smoke when i excelerate and has done since i got it

Sounds as though you might of noticed it just in time if it's as bad as you say.

Undo the jubilee clip on the black plastic hose that comes from the air filter and wiggle the hose off.
Once you have removed the hose you should be able to get your hand into the turbine side of the turbo, there will be a small nut in the centre of the turbine blades.
Grab hold of this and see if there is any movement side to side and in and out.

Think I may have a piccy posted on here somewhere I'll nip and have a look for it.

Holy **** !
that looks bad
The engine has been running great no problems just black smoke on excelaration
Guess I must have caught it at the right time
Will try to get it all stripped off tomorrow, then get the bugger sent off and rebuilt

Or could i possibly fit a bigger turbo and intercooler ? mmm will look into the cost ect

i take it i will have to get the intercooler off and cleaned out also
I will replace the pipes for new as they have seen better days

Massive thank you M:)ick
And I see you are a fellow stokie

If there's a small amount of play up and down, this is normal, oil pressure will illuminate this but in and out play it's knackered! Most turbos do weep a little oil and is no cause for concern

Its not what i would call a weep thats the worry
the pipe that goes into the bottom of the intercooler is soaked in oil

If you are looking into the turbo n there is movement away n towards you, the turbo is knackered, yes..?

Dont condemn the turbo just yet, most if not all small turbo diesel engines pass a little oil, you will also be amazed just how much oil mist/vapour comes out of the breather pipe, this of course vents into the turbo intake, so can make it look way worse than it is.
Look on the bright side the disco turbo is half price of defender unit and theres load of second hand ones out there

You may regret thats Mick
I have to take it all apart tomorrow [/QUOTE]

No prob like I said shout if you need a hand

cheers Mick
I sripped everything down yesterday, turbo off manifold off
Then I got to thinking I might as well strip the rest of the front end as i want to do a few repairs
Will get some pics on under a new thread

Mine has passed oil for years, blows a bit of smoke when cold and uses a little oil but should be fine for years to come.
No play in turbo so until something lets go that's how it stays.

They will say what all turbo people say, its fooked sir and we have got to do a full refurb!

yep Why did i send it
just had a call to say it fooked and needs a full rebuild £330 + vat
told them to get f***ed

will try another route

so does the 3ootdi turbo fit :D

That is about right to properly rebuild that turbo. Ive always found turbo technics pretty helpful myself, and had excellent service from the units they have done.

300 turbo can be fitted, but make sure its a good one, or you may end up getting that one rebuilt instead :D
