Hello, i have a 2008 LR322 with a 3.6V8 diesel. I have a grayish substance floating in the coolant reservoir. No history of overheating. No starting problem. Is it most likely the gearbox oil cooler? Or should i be looking at something else, maybe de diesel cooler. There is no coolant in the gearbox or engine oil. Hope some one can shed some light on this

Any air bubbles in the coolant tank when the engine is running and warmed up properly?
Try fishing some of the goo out to take a closer look and or get a second opinion maybe before shelling out on your pennies!:D
 
I replaced the oil cooler with oil filter assembly and carter ventilation. Problem not resolved. Is there anywhere else where oil can get into the cooling system except for the cilinder heads. The strange thing is that there is not a drop of coolant in the engine oil. Any one delt with this problem before? Is there a service manual available for this engine?

No coolant in the oil because the combustion pressures are greater than the coolant pressures and the leak only happens when the engine is HOT?

DanClark if you say combustion pressure is higher tham coolant pressure you are also saying that i have a head gasket problem or worst case a crack in my cilinder head
 
If that was the case, you would see a difference in the temp gauge behaviour because the gasses are also hotter than the coolant temp and you say it doesn't over heat?
Sniff test might be a good idea to rule out any gasses in the coolant.
I've seen cars with rotting rubber pipes before that leave crap in the reservoir.
Did you flush the system with a cleaner, rinse and refill. It could also be residue from a previous repair.
 
You may need to do a compression test to fully disregard head gasket issues, unless other diagnosis finds the problem first. It's not unusual for a failing head gasket to let water out and not coolant in. As the engine warms, things expand and as another member suggests, engine pressure is greater, pushing oil out. Early stages of gasket failure may not exhibit any other symptoms. Cracked cylinder head/block certainly would and highly unlikely to happen without some serious abuse.
 
EGR coolers can leak. Which cause coolant loss and white smoke.

Head gaskets in the TDV8 aren't unheard of.

Best buy the Jag V8 they don't get these issues ;)
 
- Cleaned reservoir several times very good.
- If it was the EGR cooling leaking, it would not bring oil into the coolant i think.
- I do see oil pipes going to the turbo, no coolant pipes
After all the thoughts i noticed that when i drive easy there is not much sludge in the reservoir. When i step on it it fills up quickly. I will do the CO2 test. Anyone, an service manual will help me when replacing the headgasket
