Hi all, I have a RRC fitted with a 1987 3.5 efi & auto box . Have done a oil change on auto box & now going to do transfer box on Sat, does the transfer box take the same oil that is Dexron IID ATF or EP90 thanks.

Peter...

have a check with other ,more knowledgeable, people on here (as I am a complete novice with regard to this mechanical stuff), but I am sure I read somewhere about not doing a complete oil change in one go on an autobox????? not looking to alarm you, but may be worth checking?

Pretty sure it had something to do with some acid reaction that creates sludge which then stops the auto change, which then necessitated something called "Giving it the treatment" - which involved driving the thing and whacking it into reverse to clear it???

I could of course be completely mixing up several different things here - but better to check and be sure. Sorry to go off on a tangent...but will be interested in the responses in anticipation of doing my own in the near future:confused2:

ATF Dexron IID, same as gear box

Sorry to disagree, if the guy has a pre '88 (Borg Warner 'box) it'll be the LT230T transfer box & needs EP90. Interestingly the LR w/shop manual states that ''engine oil or a mix of gear & engine oil can be used'' but I've always stuck to EP90.

Well if you insist for sure it can be used, but i saw, actually think it was in RAVE it was the same as GB oil and if you look up the recommended type at places there sell oil its the same as Gear box oil ATF Dexron IID or III, some do say you can use the EP90 or 70 if you like,
If it was me and having the ATF on the shelf I wouldn't hesitate and use that, suppose its a matter of "taste":)

Hmmm ? Interesting suggestions.

I'm also an RR newbie, running a very basic 1985 4-door Classic, 3.5 on carbs, and manual 5 speed gearbox.

The manual saying to use engine oil in both gearbox and transfer box, I'd not considered anything different. One or the other of them does whine a bit though, so d'you think Dexron IID ATF or EP90 would quieten it down a bit? I have injected some Krause G, which seeeeemed to soften it a bit, but that might just have been wishful thinking.

Any opinions, or is this whine just normal and I'm being a bit sensitive after coming from years in a Jaguar?

Johnny.

Maybe something for the classic people to answer (if it was mine i wouldn't just use engine oil, probably get in touch with Opie or like)

Many years ago I used a gearbox oil additive from Redline. It did wonders in my Toyota Supra Turbo which had a worn syncro.

Best of luck with the rolling renovation. I miss my classics a lot!

My EP90 recomendation is scourced from the genuine LR w/shop manual but of course you are free to use what takes your fancy. The shrill wine is a feature of the gear-driven T/boxes which is why LR changed to the BW unit in '88, which is a chain driven unit & incorporates the self-locking VCU in place of the previous manual diff-lock. My own '87 is low mileage therefore there is very little 'whine' & having had to replace VCU's in the past I'm very happy with the 'old' set-up.

EP90..

if its a lt230..NOT bw then LT90 LT90 put dex in and watch the cogs fall out the bottom..

After spending a morning tweaking in Classic Kevs barn, the old Classic is running 100% better, even if it does still have a split carb diaphragm, but if nothing else, we've proved that who ever did the supposed "Full Service" on it prior to me buying it, was a Lyin' Bassa.

So along with new filters etc, a full oil change will now be undertaken ASAP. From the opinions expressed in this thread I gather that EP90 should be used in the (pre BW) T/case, but should it also be used in the 5sp man. G/box?

Any strong recommendations for engine oil? Halfords is fairly convenient (20 miles) for me, but otherwise I do mainly shop on the net.

Cheers again Kev, I owes ya big time mate.

Johnny.
