1997 4.6 HSE oil filter won't budge! My chain tool has now gouged a hole in the filter, so I can't even drive it to a garage. I've put so much pressure on it that the chain filter removal tool handle has bent. Useless thing.
Anybody have a good way to get the filter off? I'm nearly at the stage of bashing a bar through the filter, but fear it'll just tear the can around.

11 litres is completely empty, you've got fluid in the cooler, pipes, t/c,valves and all the galleries in the box so that accounts for quite a few litres. One one site I was reading a few years ago it suggested when you had drained the fluid to start the engine for about 10 to 20 seconds and you would get more out, but never tried it in case it knackered something up or caused and air lock. Someone else might shed some light on that one.

It's a good idea to do the oil change and do it again a week later, it allows you to dilute the old fluid and refill it again with new oil. The only other way is to have it running while doing it untill it runs clear and then your guaranteed it's all changed! But without the apparatus it's not possible...
Drop oil, refill, drop oil, refill again.
The torque converter will hold a lot of oil and as said the oil cooler as well.
About 4ltrs a time if iirc!;)

Well, the claw-thingie arrived this morning and I've managed to remove the filter. Took a 2 foot breaker bar to loosen it!
Next question:
I changed the auto box fluid and filter too. When I checked the handbook, it said 4.6 auto box capacity was 11 litres, but when I put 7 in, it filled the gearbox dipstick tube completely! Necessitating diving underneath again to drain off some dextron 3. I've cycled the box through all gears, and checked the level when ticking over, but can't see how 11 litres will fit in. And I've bought 15 litres of the stuff too! Any ideas?

Bemble did a post on this a while back. As others have said you cannot get it all out in 1 go so you have to do it 3 or 4 times to get the vast majority replaced.
