Hi all,
I had a lot of oil on the driveway after a long drive recently. A lot more than normal! I found the front propshaft covered in oil, as well as chassis cross member between the gearbox and engine. The engine oil filter also looked a mess. I am wondering if the oil filter needs to be checked/reseated. The landy did have a recent service with oil/filter change but as I only using it weekends and fair weather it was sometime since the service. My question is whether it is feasible to remove the oil filter housing without having to drain the engine fully. Inspect the seal and reseat, tighten? I have a new filter and some oil on order in case I need to replace the o ring. I'm a beginner when it comes to mechanics but i feel this should be well within my abilities. I'm just un familiar if its better to drain beforehand if i am only trying to rule out the problem as an incorrect fitting.

You dont need to drain the oil but expect a lot to come out of the filter holder so you will need to top it up after. I would look underneath with the engine running to see if it is leaking from the filter before trying to reseat it.

Try having a look with the engine running as said and if it is dripping from the filter housing try half a turn on the big retaining nut on the end of the housing. Chances are this will sort it but if it continues then it may be the rubber ring that has failed.

Best take it to garage jet wash and get right underneath around back of engine and sump area too to clean it up, after a hard drive it comes out of more places than normal pottering about have a peak around
Rocker cover seal , oil feed pipe back of engine, sump gasket , oil filter , sometimes the oil pressure switch leaks too
If doing the filter seal it helps to turn the filter body as you tighten bolt.

I will get everything cleaned up and hopefully be able to find the source with the engine running. I’ll come back here when hopefully I’ll have an answer but thanks for everyone’s advice to get started.

Do try and work out how much the engine oil is down, by measurement from the dip stick.
It is possible for the big metal can to have gone on a little out of true, which may cause a leak. it's app 1 litre of oil for the filter housing. a large piece of cardboard from an old box under the motor can be usefull too
 
Thanks Wagon Loon for the welcome. Will hopefully be able to get onto this at the weekend and I have some oil on order for top-up.
I have been putting off a clean underneath but this will be a good a time as any.
 
Take the whole thing off, clean and replace filter and O ring otherwise it’ll do your head in.....like my leak ☹️....I see you say you are a novice mechanic, you won’t be for long wit a Series All the best and welcome
 
It turned out the filter housing was incorrectly fitted. I ran the engine and confirmed the source. The dip stick was at MIN. Removed, cleaned off all the parts, replaced with new filter and o ring (I agree Fatrover, for the small cost it was worth it) . Seated the ring with a small amount of oil beforehand. Primed the oil filter, check for leaks then topped up 20w50. I needed 4L to get between L and H so had lost alot! The filter I removed was Bearmach and the O ring looked fine.

I fitted a filter holder from a slightly later 2.5NA diesel engine to mine. These use the metal spin-on canister type filters.

It makes changing the filter a lot less messy.
