You have, although on a TD4, it's accessed from the top. All other engines require the sump guard to be removed to access the filter.

Not really, unless you're venturing off road. It's not a strong item, but it does provide a degree of protection from objects hitting the sump and other vulnerable areas. On the road it helps keep the underside of the engine bay clean, but not much else.
I personally don't see what the issue is with it. It takes under 10 minutes to remove or refit, so I prefer to keep it in place.
There are various gravel tracks that I take when I go fishing. Every now and then I see a nice new big black line where someone's had a rock/stone go through their sump.

I was hurtling down 1 of these tracks one day when I realised I hadn't put the tray back on. I slowed down after that. As you say, its not going to stop a big rock flying up doing damage, but it must offer some level of protection - and stop stones getting grabbed by belts.

You're keen. Think I've checked the IRD (and gearbox) oil level once since I rebuilt the IRD 5 years ago. I've never checked the rear diff in the 8 years I've owned the car and its been through transmission trauma in that time.

I change my IRD oil every 2 years, simply because it's a hard working component.

poor thing. I bet the oil is well past it's best, even if it's not working for a living now.

Getting an oil extractor today. What is the best engine oil for Freelander 1, 2 litreTD4? I have had a look at some and they are asking stupid prices.
