Hi,

2001 FL1 Td4

I have had a bit of oil in the water for a while but no overheating or steam or smoke in exhaust, temp fine (even in 30 + C Portugal weather) or anything suchlike.

But suddenly the temp gauge was creeping up to halfway, which wasn't that alarming but higher than normal and so I decided to check levels

However, before I got home I suddenly started to loose power and looked down and temp was up in red

Managed to stop and pull over (Thanks God I had just got over the Lisbon suspension bridge!) and car overheated immediately as airflow stopped

Opened bonnet and very black oil coming out of expansion bottle along with steam - Bugger!

Let it cool down, opened expansion bottle gingerly (funnily enough like me :) ) and no water but loads of thick very black treacly oil (not emulsified at all)

Checked dipstick - nothing - Bugger & Bugger! Poo even!

Nothing to loose so to calm my nerves and see if engine was now one piece only item I turned key and it surprisingly (I only expected to see if seized or not) it immediately roared into life (and was even more quickly turned off again).

Got a lift home on back of truck and a couple of days later I am now taking a look:

Oil cooler dry as a bone externally - no oil or water leak

Drained oil and still quite a lot in there, but totally black, no water or creamy emulsions - Phew!

Took off bottom hose to drain out any remaining coolant and it was completely full of this appetising licorice black treacle consistency oil. Scraped out as much as I could with a stick and only a couple of drops of coolant came out - not sure if because it all boiled off or because cooling system is so blocked with oily sludge that any water in there is trapped in there.

So ....... finally to my questions :)

1. Oil cooler is most likely culprit - correct?

2. If so, are there two gaskets? one between mounting block and block, and one between cooler and mounting block?

3. If so, can failure of either of these gaskets allow oil to get into the coolant, or can this only happen if the cooler itself breaks internally?

4. What is it likely to be, gaskets or cooler? Not definitively, just what 'normally' happens?

5. Any other advice? It would be most gratefully received!
 
Is yours manual or auto? On mine the auto box cooler failed, and at the time I discovered that it was a relatively common failure item

Yes two gaskets change both even get another oil cooler if you can, have a read of this my friends Rover 75 diesel suffered the same problem the FL1 and the Rover 75 diesel have the same engine M47.

The Haines FL book says take out starter and radiator but looking at it I am not sure if necessary. I am probably wrong.
I will try and cost/source a new cooler anyone got any advice on where and where not to try to buy? I am in PT so post Brexit, Europe (inc Ireland) and not UK is best, if not only option given PT customs!

With the amount of oil in the water - litres - it must be a significant leak between oil and water
Since there is no water in the oil I guess the oil pressure must be greater than the water pressure at the cooler, which surprises me

But ..... Motormaquina can only get Britpart from UK, so with customs its 200 quid (probably plus 23% VAT - I didnt ask)

Just looking at @Arctic2 s final link on his post reveals many available within the EU so should be easy to get.

Some pretty cheap too.

I think OEM parts are Britpart? Excuse my ignorance, but are they much better than non OEM?

I went for the 50 quid one from DMGRS

In case anyone else has problems ordering online from them as well, I could only get it to work by using the Paypal button on the screenshot below. Clicking the CHECKOUT button didnt work, neither for the following Paypal nor Credit Card options. Strange.
