Can anyone settle this for me once and for all, as I'm getting very frustrated and annoyed with 'Paddocks' now! My problem is as some of you may know, I'm doing a discovery engine conversion into my 87 defender. I have completed the conversion now apart from fitting the exhaust,(exhust part is in hand) and oil cooler pipes.

The reason I haven't got the oilcooler pipes sorted yet is because 'paddocks' keep sending me the wrong parts!! I asked someone on here where they got the oil cooler pipes I needed to fit this disco engine conversion into my defender adaption I'm doing, and they said 'paddocks'. So I contacted paddocks, told them what I was doing, and they said I needed td pipes, and adapters to fit on the disco rad. So I ordered these, when I tried to fit them, the td pipes were the right length, and they fitted ok at the rad end with the adpaters, but at the end where they screw into the oilfilter housing, they didnt fit! (wrong type of thread).

So I phoned them, and after much time waiting on the phone, they then said sorry, we told you the wrong thing, what I actually need is defender oilcooler pipes, but because apparently the defender oilcooler pipes have female ends that connect to the oil filter housing, so I need some male adapters for them. (also I have issues with imperial, and metric fittings with this conversion)

So I ordered the adapters, and when they turned up, they are the wrong type of thread for the disco oil filter housing, so I cant do it that way either, so not only have I had to send back the TD pipes, I now have to send back these adapters they sent me, and hopefully cancel the defender oilcooler pipes they said they would send me after the xmas hols.

(I just hope I can contact them before they send me these defender pipes out, as for one thing the postage is costing me loads too!) I know loads of people have done this disco 200tdi engine conversion into a defender using the disco rad too. But I dont recall anyone else having the problems on any of the read ups on here getting the correct pipes! So can an expert on here PLEASE! advise me as to exactly the pipes, and fittings I need to do this??

I should of done what I was going to do in the first place, and get my disco pipes that came with the engine lengthened by 'pertek' The reason I didnt do that was because one of the pipes got squashed in transit when my engine was being delivered. But I'm so fed up now with too'ing and throwing of parts to paddock, I think it would be better to buy a new pipe, then get that, and the other non damaged one I have altered by 'pertek'.

But I am curious, all the people that have done this conversion on here, how did you get around this problem?? As it is driving me insane! I could have finished this ages ago if it wasnt for this problem with the oil cooler pipes. I mean surely so many people have done this conversion now, I would of though a place like 'Paddocks' would have known exactly what I needed!?

They are one of the biggest landy parts suppliers, surely loads of people must have inquired about this to them many times before? Please help if you can, it would be much appriciated! And A merry christmas, and happy new year to all!

bloody hell that sounds like a nightmare! just go to a scrappers and get the disco pipes and extend them. some how i was very lucky and my old td defender oil piped just fitted straight on the disco oil filter housing and rad!

why cant u use the disco parts?

when i put a 300 tdi disco engine into me fender we used the existing disco oil cooler pipes just extended them a tad

The disco pipes were to short, and as I said one got damaged in transit when engine delivered too me, but Yeah, have ordered one new disco pipe to replace damaged one, and will now get both altered by 'pertek'. :(

You were lucky. Cant understand why the td pipes I bought from 'paddocks' didn't fit?? There must have been variations in the oil filter housings over the years.

I got ones for my Defender from Craddocks and then found out I could have got them from a MoD online store for a quarter of the price

And did your pipes fit the disco oil filter housing? Am I the only person to have done this conversion have this problem?? then you said you got yours from 'craddocks' and not 'paddocks'. Thats confusing in it's own right! Intresting about the MOD online store though, do you have the addy for future reference? :)

It was 18 months ago fella, I just Googled it. ;)

there was a slight variation in the disco 200tdi engines over the years what it was is that some disco oil cooler pipes was a straight bit of pipe with a banjo type fitting and the others had a tapered type fitting on the end of the pipe. i had the same problem when i done mine, all i did was find another oil filter housing from a later type disco 200. i then used pipes OIL COOLER PIPES ESR280 &ESR281 which i bought from paddocks.

Just been through this myself.
Having got a quote from a local hydraulics company who also said the resulting items would be clunky affairs with lost of various adapters attached, I just went to the local main dealer and bought pipes off the shelf. For me it was a perfect fit and no extra adapters needed. I may have been lucky judging by other peoples troubles!

My engine and cooler were from a J reg 91 200tdi disco.
I bought ESR280 and ESR281 as stated above and paid £49 all in.

Well that explains it. Thank you. Whats annoying is that they are the pipes I just sent back cos they didn't fit my early housing then! Think my best and cheapest option now is to get the original ones lengthened by pertek. Will save me much hassle. So obviously I also know I've got an early 200tdi engine, which is worth remembering. A merry christmas to all!:)

I didnt think it could just be me! Thanks for sharing your troubles too. Why oh why do they have to make such small unessasary changes to things?? if something works, then why not leave it as it is? it would be so much easier for us sorcing parts. It's not like they are updating the shape of the vehicle or something which I can understand why, to keep up with the times and peoples tastes. Then That could be said about many things in life I guess. Or is that just too simple. Thats my moan for the day, I always have at least one a day being middle aged. :blabla: :D Merry christmas anyway. Hmmmm, Wonder what the odds are of me getting a later type oil filter housing from santa?:);)

Even worse was that I sold my old Disco cooler pipes on eBay.

When they arrived the buyer claimed I'd sent the wrong parts off a different car.

Claimed he was an ex-LR engineer and that I didn't know what I was talking about.

The pipes I sold had part numbers attached & these matched the application on Microcat. Seems to be a lot of confusion out there re threads, fitments etc.... but couple that with eBay numpties and its frought with pain.

I refunded the chump just to shut him up without leaving me bad feedback.
