Well after replacing the somewhat blackened oil on the 'new' to us V8 3.9 (EFI) with 10W40 semi synth which is what I read of a chart somewhere for the rover v8. After running the engine after the service it did sound quite a bit happer than before. However, I am now feeling a bit paranoid about if I have put the right oil in it! I have looked in many places and have found extremely varying answers. I'm very confused! I've read things from 0W30 to 20W30.

Is the 10w40 I have just put in ok?

 :(

Yes my disco has always run on 10w40 from day one, 10w is just right for the ambient temps in my part of the world.

Good to hear, though I am sure I can hear a tappet going now I've had a closer listen this morning :( Maybe I'm just being paranoid but I am sure it's there. I'll get me neighbor to have a listen when he's back. A little worried. It's not that loud but I'm sure its there. Hard to hear over the sound of all the belts and things along with the cat rattling and the zorst burble.

20w 50 for rv8 as leyland tolerances never changed from 1970 to 1995 lol

10W40 is fine, ours has run on that since we did the engine rebuild 5 years ago, no problems.

We have used diesel oil rather than petrol, better spec and keeps it clean internally.

I think there later recommend of 10w40 semi was trying to pretend to everyone they had a modern engine under there when really it was a ww2 design! With a flat tappet engine you want lots of zinc in the oil such to the point real steel sell an additive as none of there fancy modern oils have any. Comma sonic is £12 for 5 liters trade price, has loads of zinc and exceeds the spec for the rv8 and it's also 20w50, save some cash and wear and try it :)

We had old cam followers, rockers etc in our engine and they are still there, nothing has changed dramatically over 60k miles, we know that one is a bit likely to lose pressure if standing with the valve open overnight and the spring pressure on the follower, but quite honestly it isn't something I think about.

I have a new camshaft and followers, bought them three years ago but they don't need replacing.

One of the hardest bits the engine has had to do was pulling up a long hill out of one of the valleys in Belgium, it goes on for about 10 miles and is a flat out 3rd gear slog with the big trailer behind. It survived that with no problems so I think the oil is OK.

Interesting, I have always put 20w50 Comma in the 71 Rangie, and 10w40 semi synth in the disco 3.9, I justified it to myself by saying the serpentine 3.9's have a better oil pump so can keep oil pressure up a bit better, the 3.5's with the old dizzy driven pump need that 20w50 to keep up oil pressure at idle especially when they're a bit worn, can't really see why it would matter to much though, regular oil changes are the key....
Comma oil is excellent value for money to IMO

It's the pre 76 sd1 pumps that were really poor, I updated mine in the 72 rangie with the high vol kit which brings it up to the later spec. Not sure the later pump changed I till the rotary one but they changed the oil grade in the book ages before that trying to look modern next to Toyota and the like lol

Mine is a pre serp efi engine. Dont know if any of you guys saw my post about being paranoid in the disco section?
