Morning Folks,

I've been looking at the haynes manual but can't find the answer so thought I'd ask here. I want to do an oil change on my disco and wondered if its possible to remove the oil filter from the top, also if i put a tube down the dipstick and use an oil extractor ( an old manual one I used on me boat ) will it get to the deepest bit of the sump..or should I park it facing down a hill. I know it sounds lazy but I'm just trying to make it so a regular change can be a 10 minute job with out me rolling around underneath it on the street....cheers

top would be the easiest for the filter so long as you got long arms and are over 6 ft. If not your going under it reaching around the diff and propshaft. While your down there you might aswell take the sump plug off (30mm socket for that) and drain normally. them suction jobbys never get it all out

I use a difflock drain plug with the drain hose, works a treat. Do your next oil change as normal then instead of replacing the sump plug replace it with one of these, next time there is no mess, when you attach the hose the oil then comes out down the hose and into a container, no mess!

I'll stick with careful positioning of an old washing-up bowl and some rags.

A good idea but it is a bit much for a drain plug and for the pipe

Hi, After reading your post stating 30mm socket for sump drain plug, I went and bought a 30mm socket.
Went under my 300Tdi M reg Disco to check it fitted, and wow man 30mm is well too big!
My drain plug is at the back of the sump and looks about 12 - 13 mm.
What am I missing here?

There's 2 sizes - 30mm and 15mm. It seems LR fitted them at random.
Shoulda had a look before splashing out.
At least the 30mm will come in useful when yer does yer cam belt.

Hiya Trewy!
thanx 4 the info on the sump plug size. Those Land Rover builder guys are well naughty! But whatever, that's all part of the fun of owning a Landie anyway.
I'm gonna do me timing belt on Friday and saturday, so hopefully the 30mm socket will get a run out anyway. I've just managed to slot a 27mm socket onto the crankshaft pulley nut so I can't work out (yet) what I will I need the 30mm socket for. Can ya put me right agin pleeze?

I'd have expected your crankshaft bolt to be 30mm.
Oh well, another LR quirk.

Hmmm, yep, well I'll be able to use me 30mm on the gearbox drain plug, cos I really think that one is 30mm (well it's bloomin' big anyway). When I have fianally managed to change me timing (cam) belt, do an oil change, replace me oil and me fuel filters and me air filter oh yes and me serpentine belt, I think I'll post a report on what tools, stuff and problems I needed / encountered. That will maybe help all the other newbies like me, 'cos I'll put it all in idiot proof words for idiots like me!

Yes the drain plug is a bit steep but is dosn't half make it easy and mess free.

Oil up the sleeve is a great feeling though, seems a shame to miss out. Like changing the fuel filter on a petrol injection vehicle "remove fuel pump relay, start engine to eliminate fuel pressure" What's wrong with doing it off the cuff, ciggy in mouth, on your mum's expensive shingle driveway?
