changing out the centrifuge filter and I have stripped the thread on one of the cover bolts.

considering its location a retap is going to prove very challanging, any other solutions out there would be appreciated.

I thought about bulking up thread with ptfe tape a kindof pushing my luck?

got the same on mine the one is stripped but holding i was thinking of putting a nut abolt on it.or trying to go one size up.my avatar is the wife replacing mine my monkey fingers to big:eek:
 
you can get socket type tap holders that you can use 3/8 extensions on,helicoil would be my favourite or another housing ,i wouldnt push my luck another engine would be more awkward
 
How true, the thought of 7 litres of oil in full flow over a hot engine scares the hell out of me, not to mention the open heart surgery required should it happen.

Think I am going to go for a replacement
 
There is not enough metal to drill and tap one size up. You can remove the centrifuge housing from the engine then fit a helicoil but once again there is not that much metal to play with. Drilling through and fitting a long bolt with a nut is also not a viable option.

If you know someone who knows how to weld aluminium alloy then you can get the lug built up then drill and retap. I've seen chemical metal used like this in Africa but I cant vouch for its logevity.

From memory its only three 10mm bolts and the two holding the drain tube to the engine sump which are easier to get out than the two holding the drain tube to the bottom of the centrifuge housing. With a little jiggling the housing will drop out below without having to remove the turbo.

Too late now but the cover bolts are only supposed to be tightened to something like 7 lb/ft.

What is the part I need to replace then? Is it the centrifuge housing or return and does anyone know where to get one and how much I should be paying?
Also, what sort of pressure is it under with only one bolt holding it?

have had the same issue with my td5 defender for 4 years now all i get is the very slightest weep through the lid with only 1 bolt holding it
 
Its at full oil pump pressure which could be as much as 60psi when cold.

Another simple way I've seen it done is to chemical metal or epoxy a short piece of studding into the stripped hole and use a nut and washer to close the lid.
 
So it should be OK to use then with just the one bolt for the moment while I have a look round for one being broken to get a new is it a drain or housing?
 
Having thought about the oil pressure in the rotor housing I have to say that although the rotor will receive full oil pump pressure the actual housing is open via the drain to the sump so there will be very little pressure inside the housing pressing against the cover. Its probably why they dont leak very often.
 
sorted mine changed the oil at the weekend whilst the main oil filter was off i reached through and i could fell the bottom of the spinner housing wich is a straight through hole dropped a nut & bolt through after changing the spinner now nice and secure
To be fair before i fixed it it left a very slight residue of oil around the seal so i wasnt to worried about it to much. but now its done The one i changed was the closest to the engine

Come on guys.... a simple nut and bolt streight through with a spring washer does the job just fine!! we have probably 10 vehicles running like this and never any problems. Its a bit of an easy fix .......
