Hi all
I’m no mechanic so what I saw today made me panic. I’m based in Middle East and have very little good support / local knowledge here for working on td5 defenders.
I left my 2006 defender td5 for a month , returned today , topped up water a little , checked oil noticing it was a bit low (No visible contamination of water in oil )
10 minute drive home , driving perfect until once I parked up I noticed huge amounts of oil under the car.
Further inspection I traced it to the water header tank of all things , the tank full of thick black oil .
Please any suggestions , googling it it suggests oil cooler.

Justin

Hopefully just a gasket or o-ring on the oil cooler. I had this on a tdi, but this as an all-in-one radiator/oil cooler so not quite the same.

Thanks Bluedog
It’s a shocking amount of oil in the water tank. It’s blown out every where.
So far i have seen it in torch light so will look more in the morning. I have been googling oil coolers, location etc since hoping it will make more sense.

+1 on the oil cooler too.
You did mention that you're not a mechanic, but do you do any spannering at all?

Because considering you said you have very little good support where you live, how are you going to get it sorted?
Not really difficult if you know what you're doing, and having all the needed spares at hand prior to taking everything apart would help as well.

Thanks for the response . I am learning quick with Defender mechanics ... certainly theory so once I’m at the garage with use of the tools I can with them work through it.
I have just had no experience before buying this car....
My main problem is finding some one with good experience and knowledge with the td5 or any defender after 300 tdi. They won’t generally touch it.
July I was home in UK and purchased a list of all those small things like sensors ,injector relays and fuel valves that seem to be common problems.
Today’s shenanigans I didn’t see coming. Very upset to see my Defender with what looks like it’s arteries have been cut .

Thanks Bluedog

When it happened on my tdi it was gushing out of the expansion tank like a geyser!
