hello AGAIN!! i just groveled under my range rover looking to see if my aircon drain plugs were blocked, and noticed oil coming out of the 3 bolt round plate on the bottom of the gear box and from between the engine and bellhousing. the oil is brown, so from the engine, it looks like its coming from the top of the sump. is this another common problem with these 4.0ltr p38's? i seem to be finding quite alot of them..

You may have leaking rear crankshaft oil seal or sump gasket or camshaft rear plug. Leaking inlet manifold gasket is also common problem.

blimey. there's quite alot of problems with these cars isn't there?

what would be the best leak to get then? i guess the sump one, but not sure..

i hope its not the crank case seal, cos that would be well hard to fix wouldn't it?

well, yes there is, despite problems i like them ;)

Before you start to think about removing the engine, it's good idea to check if crankcase ventilation system is free from sludge. When pressure in crankcase is increased, seals are prone to leak.

I think a good tip is to put a bucket of sand in the boot, and when you feel the time is right you can just stick your head in it. Summer is a good time to fix things.

The sand will also come in handy to soak up all the oil on your driveway ;)

remove the engine!? oh dear god, i hope i dont have to do that! does anyone want to buy my W reg 4.0ltr SE? he he

everyone kept telling me not to buy it because it was going to cost me a fortune to run and repair, but i got blinkered by how cool it is.. should have listened to them really.. its really starting to get me down now.

i've had it a month, spent about £400 on bits and bobs to fix the niggly bits that you find when you first look closely at it, and i'm on my 5th tank of fuel now too, so thats another £450-£500 already! christ!

now where is the crankcase ventilation system? i guess i need to start somewhere!

You should first check thin rubber hose from RH rocker cover to plenum chamber and another hose from LH rocker cover to throttle body.

My other advise: don't do anything, just top up the oil. When the engine block will crack (surely will same day), you will replace seal together with other parts ;)

YEP, V12 is right, dont do anything exept keep an eye on the oil levels.......It will break down again...so fix it all together! Try to love your rangie, and think of how much free advice you can get! also try to think of the fuel costs of doing that extra bit for your country, think of all those people that can now be employed at Landrover uk because of your selfless attitude to life........Other people can see that you can stare in the face of disaster and still smile and that you are a man to be recond with!;0...........Oh and get good breakdown cover.

...or drive to Poland to fix it for half price ;)

get it fixed half price maybe, but the fuel costs will cost more than the rest, and it will no doubt break down again on the way back! he he

for a big expensive car, these rangies are really badly made and prone to everything going wrong aren't they? i've made a deal with 'rumple' my range rover, that if nothing else goes wrong with him this year, i'll keep him, but if anything else does go wrong, i'm going to sell it to a banger car racer or bobtail it and use it offroad. so, we'll see eh? he he

cheers for the replies, even though they kind of made it worse for me! (only kidding!):D
