Hello All..

Having had issues with an OEM pump (Meat and Doria/Italian brand) that is being replaced by the supplier with a Hella unit… I refitted my old electric pump so that I could at least move the car about. Anyhoo in a fit of absurd recklessness I insured the car last night and then went the ‘whole hog’ and booked it in for an MOT… tomorrow!!

Will be servicing (oil/filters changed) but when I got the car out of the garage I increased the revs to help the car get up to temperatures. Using my long bar I fixed the revs at 2000rpm… initially there was a slight hesitation and what seemed to be a ‘miss’ albeit almost imperceptible… the engine settled into running at 2000rpm but almost immediately on increasing the revs the exhaust started to billow out in clouds of light ish grey/white smoke.. maybe there was a hints of the smell of diesel in the air as well it’s difficult to say.

Now a few years back I replaced an injector and the loom on the fuel pressure rail and the car ran perfectly.. and did so when parked up when it failed its MOT all those years ago. The fuel tank was removed during the refurbishment of the rear end drained of all fuel. The fuel in it now is ‘new’ fuel…

Reading on here there are a few options..

Sticking injector(s) /leak back test etc
Turbo on its way out/blown seals
Intake pipes split(boost side?)
EGR something or other(I have a delete on mine)

Anyone have any ideas I should really have taken some photos.

Increasing revs just increases smoke. Smoke present but not overly obvious on tick over.

Maybe should have waited on the MOT(wheel Alignment prior to that)

Thanks in advance

Malcolm

They do play us don't they !!!

Sounds a bit like mine when the HP pump seals failed and it fired diesel spray direct into the crankcase. Be careful that it doesn't run on and run without the key in. Bit scary !

Grey smoke is unburnt diesel so it is flooding in somewhere.
Not sure if the seals degrade with no use - it is possible.

Injector cleaner works a treat on a smoker
Wouldn't that be spreading carcinogens all over my Salmon?

If this started after holding the revs at 2k, then it could well be the illusive M47 2k misfire, which has been an unsolvable problem for a good number of years. Mine used to smoke loads if I held the revs at 2k, along with an audible misfire, but it never had an issue at the MOT. I used to give it a good thrash on the way to the MOT.

Funnily enough I was thinking along the same lines…

When I went back out to the car after posting the ‘issues’ the car didn’t produce any noticeable smoke on tick over whereby it kind of did before..

Let’s see.. anyhoo committed to going to the MOT as have wheel alignment also after the rear end rebuild.. will be under the car tonight trying to get it as close as possible before leaving in the morning. Steak for tea first…

Changed oil and filter and have replacement hose/tubing for the turbo solenoid to vacuum pump(? 🤔) to replace next It’s ropey as anything. Will be buying more silicone tubing for all those tubes and changing them out.

Might price up a new turbo also as there is a bit of oil in the hoses that go to/from the inter cooler so I think there maybe an issue there.. I have always made note of oil in those hoses since I first looked under the hood 6 odd years ago… and suspect that the seals were maybe on their way out.. I assume those hoses should be dry?

This was meant to be my daughters daily driver it’s now my own pet project in a line up of pet projects..

Hi, you'll always get a bit of oil in the intercooler/hoses. I remove & flush the intercooler out yearly with petrol & wipe out the hoses every six months, the hardest one being the metal pipe that runs around the back of the engine having said that the only time mine smoked was when the intercooler pipe was collapsing under acceleration (no splits). I did replace all the hoses with silicone but found they 'sweated' oil & always felt slimey so I put them all back to std rubber (silicone fine for all the turbo solenoid side of things). I tried the modified eng. breather valve but went back to the paper filter type as I'm sure that made a difference to the amount of oil that collected in the intercooler system, all the best.

I had similar issues after letting mine stand for several months in lockdown unused. I replaced all injectors, new MAF and fuel rail sensor and loom. And a new turbo cartridge, and fully cleaned out all the crud from the inlet manifold. It still smoked though, especially at 2k rpm.

Having booked the MOT I thought I’d give it a shot. As I pulled out my road and up the hill I was thinking oh no. What a waste of time. I looked in my rear view mirror and you could not see the road behind me for smoke, as I was flooring it in a low gear. Then after a quarter of a mile or so it cleared.

It then went on to pass the MOT at the garage a couple of miles away, and sail through the emissions check.

It may just be it needs a good old bit of welly to clear out what is in there still.

As nodge says the 2k misfire/smoke when standing is probably the other issue. It only happened with me when I held it at 2k while stationary.

Good luck tomorrow.

As far as I know, the 2k misfire hasn't been solved yet. I've a suspicion that it's related to oil being drawn through the intake from the breather. However I sold my TD4 before I had a chance to test my theory.

Yes I ditched the ‘upgrade’ filter separator thing. Regular servicing and being a ‘nosey owner’ sticking it where others fear to look. Actually checked all that last night before a short test drive.. I thought I had swapped it over and yes I had done that. No harm done just took 30 minutes etc.

Thank you and having done some servicing work I started the car last night and.. no smoke.. anyhoo I went for a ‘test drive’ and didn’t t notice anything untowards..except the offside front brake was binding. Got up early this morning and removed the callipers carriers and fitted new slide pins and stainless pad ‘runners’ to both sides. I think that sorted that as this morning I got to the MOT centre for a ‘wheel alignment’ without issues… and NO smoke..

MOT in about an hour… same place ..

The MOT tester said we can do the alignment after the MOT if it passes.. so we don't charge you for work not needed…a fair point but I told him that the rear had been completely rebuilt and that without the alignment then I risk destroying the diff/VCU/IRD … he was ‘onside’ completely. I ‘d rather get home safely and not destroy those items if I have to have a retest I can fix that.. those other items would cost more to fix than the perceived value of the car..

If it’s smoking a lot then it’s always worth checking inside the front of your cat. Mine was blocked near completely shut. Big dose of dpf cleaner and a lot of boiling water later it’s totally clean and I’ve got barely any smoke. Only getting the little after puff you get when you hit the limiter. It also flys again.

Hello Ross was thinking along those lines but had the exhaust off to carry out all the work under the car. It looked clear so I left it but certainly was on my list etc. car drives beautifully now and has a bit of poke even for 112bhp or whatever it’s meant to be..

It could also just need a good hard run. When I grandad mine around for a while to save fuel it always eventually starts smoking after a few weeks. A good Italian tune up always clears it out. I usually take it a good 100 mile run but that’s me, any excuse to hit the highlands in my old landy.

Haha a trip to The Highlands is definitely needed last time I went up there was in 2009 and in a Range Rover TDV8 (a ‘works’ car so to speak) it too was black like my TD4. Don’t get to travel like I used to that needs to change… not sure if Greta would like to come along for the trip…

Yeah the highlands and a Land Rover go hand in hand 👍 although we’re in fife now so it’s a bit further a trek but we’ll wroth it.
