I'm thinking of getting some mud terrain tyres, BF Goodrich MT's for when I'm in the fields and some boggy mud, whats the verdict on these for really boggy mud??? Also is it better to get thin tyres or wider, at the minute I have 235 80 16's on, farmer whose land I go on said thinner tyres were better for the mud. other blokes I've spoke to said wide tyres.. Help! lol:D
 
Narrow offers better traction and cleanout, but less float. For me when I am running mud I don't want to float, so narrow is my choice. The other thing is if you have wide tires and it snows you may just as well be driving a YUGO rather than a 4x4.
 
Thanks for the reply, I just thought with the wider tyres as you say they would sink less, causing less damage when I'm driving round...
 
Hi there,

I prefer wider tyres although what greenjeepster is saying is correct. If your going into deep ruts the height of the tyre is more important because this will give you a better ground clearance under the diffs.
 
I too have BFGoodrich 265/75 r16 MUD terrains and i would not trade them in for any other tyre on the market!!!!
Larger sizes however will mean the speedo is slightly off, and cornering at high speeds is a little scary sometimes
 
mine too is sitting on BFG M/T. i've never lost traction unless i've been grounded with the underbelly on the floor. BFG say they are 20% on road 80% off road, but i personally think they arent bad at all on road and despite wot others say, the road noise is better than other mud tyres out there. think too about the compromise between off and on road. u dont want mahooosive tyres with knobs and lumps if most of ur driving is on road.

Going up sizes will also kill your gpm. I went from 215/75.R15 to 235/75.R15 and lost 6 mpg. in my truck.
M/Ts are a good general all around tire, so is the Goodyear Wrangler is you like cheaper. I would not put Super Swampers on anything that is used as a daily driver; unless you had a second set of tires and wheels for use in the winter. If it is on just an off road vehicle I would go with a unbelted, non-directional ag tire.

I have considered 285/75s but would need to fit a 2" lift have you ever considered fitting a lift to your Landie? What are the advantages? Disadvantages? Is there any definitive reading?

255/85 r16 bf goodrich Mt (slightly narrower and bit taller) and they are great. you really have to go some to get stuck :)

high speeds and landrover dont mix well on any decent off road tyre
 
dont take one persons misfortune with lifting there landy that there all gonna do this i have a 2" lift with no probs atall!!!!..my mates disco has a 4" lift for 2 years with no probs.if you look in the for sale section i have a set of bfg muds on rims for sale..you dont need a lift with 265 75 16 tyres.i have 265 75 16 insa special tracks and although my 90 is lifted i had the tyres on b4 with no lift the only probs i had was catching on full lock because of the large side lugs..bfgs dont catch..
 
i have a 2" lift on mine no problems only one thing to note is the prop shafts take a bit more abuse because of the stress from being at a greater angle but grease them up regulary and you should be just fine
