Hey guys,

Well tomorrow's the big day, pretty sure I've found my ideal D2 - 2004 Landmark with lots of extra toys in Oslo blue. Lubbly Jubbly!!

It's a fair way away and no one can give me a lift so I'm going down on the train. I'm pretty sure it'll be fine and I'll happily hand over the cash, but I wonder if you guys could help me put together a checklist to go through when I'm looking at it? Is there anything I should look in the history to see if anything important has been left out? Anything specifics to the car that isn't part of usual checks?

Pretty excited, it'll be a really nice motor by the look of it :).

Will.

How many miles? Have a look in the history (if it has any) to see what's been changed in the past. Mines had a couple of hubs, discs and pads and a dual mass flywheel & clutch change and a new radiator! All in the previous 2 years before I got her
If it has extra toys then odds on it will have ACE and SLS air suspension - check that the warning lights come on...then go out after a self-check when the key is turned to position 2. Might be nice to have a remote key fob (green one) for the air suspension too. On the test drive, again make sure you don't get the 3 amigos or ACE and SLS lights either yellow or red!

Check the front passenger footwell for water. If the air conditioning drains get blocked then the condensation leaks out there.

Check that you can engage low box... did the 2004 have the centre diff lock refitted? If so check that you can engage that too.

Check all paper work matches up with car , do a hpi check , then test everything works on the car b4 you drive then check again after the test drive . Do at least 10miles or more in test drive . Check high and low gears , check for damp carpets , and all dash warning lights come on and go off . Then look for oil leaks on the engine gearbox diffs, ace and steering . If it has rear air ,while its turn off stand on bumper and bounce it a bit to see if it goes down. And look for rust in chassis taking extra good look at the back end . Hope it's a good one :)

RUST !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
And make sure the oil is at the right level in the engine. And that all the toys work...

rear end of chassis check this plus the ace lines, dip the oil check for diesel smell. plus see if on air 7 seater needed for insurance. makes sure it drives tight even check the ecu red plug for oil. Where the jack lives. Good luck hope you get a good one like mine

That's the plan . It's all sorted now (got rid of that stoopid EWP and all new stuff in there now) but I've just fallen outa love with it.

We just go for a beer when I'm next in the ol' country mate I owe you one :).

owe me nothing m8 if i can help i will if not i won't the td5 disco is a great beast mine has seen me well but if you get a lemon it will bankrupt you m8

Yeh, I'm hoping that the age and mileage will be in my favours. Shouldn't be too riddled with issues at 120k - hope. It'll need work sure, but as long as it's nothing really massive I can deal with it.

ive just done a bottom end engine swap as bolt had come out of oil pump £300 for the replacement bottom end and £100 or so for head gasket etc so not too bad considering

I have a 2004 Disco TD5 Landmark, and it's pretty solid, so I'm well pleased.

So far as the toys are concerned, on mine, which I believe is a standard Landmark fit I have SLS air suspension, PAS, ABS, Electronic Traction Control, Hill Descent, Front Air Con (Climate Control), Hi-line ICE, twin electric sunroofs, Face-lift headlights and reversing parking aid.

It doesn’t have Centre diff lock, ACE or built in GPS.

So, there are a few things to check out/play with and a couple that you don’t have to worry about.

Good luck with your new Disco, I hope it’s as good as mine is.

Well it checked out on every point you guys raised, thanks for that! I'm cautiously optimistic that it's a goodun! 1st and 2nd crunch a bit if you change too fast, but an oil change will proabably sort that. It drives beautifully and I think I'm really going to enjoy it!!

So thanks everyone, I'm dead chuffed! Worth getting up at 5.30 to catch a train to Cambridge for!!

id think about new baulk rings before too long ,its better done before it wears dog teeth on gears and bronze is squashed in to bearing races etc

Yeh there will be quite a lot of small jobs to do now before I fit the interesting bits :). But I think that fundamentally it seems to be in pretty good shape. I was happy with the price - got him to knock £500 off :).

i wasnt knocking it ,sounds good ,you can allways expect some issues with any used vehicle ,:)

The gearbox on mine does the crunchy bit - 3rd grabs too. However slow and steady, deliberate changes work as does double de-clutching ;)

EDIT almost 156k miles currently

The gearbox on mine does the crunchy bit

And mine on 147 k miles, revving a bit in first then changing up before the revs die away gives me a better change to second whilst 3rd needs slow selection......
