Just wondering if anyone has been on any off-roading courses and can recommend a good one?

Do you mean lanes, pay and play sites or training courses?
I went on a Land Rover experience (half day) which was great
They are quite expensive though. I was lucky, went with a mate who had won it!
Also had a half day at an independent place on a farm near Durham. That was in a defender and it was also excellent. Don't know if the still do them.

I've done a half day LR Experience at Rockingham Castle. It is well worth the money as it's individually tailored to you, one-on-one and you can choose a vehicle or take your own. There's a very varied course too.

Join your local land rover club, £20 a year ad £20 an event you will learn more in 6 months than you will in a 4 hr session costing you half a mortgage and usually taught by people that quite frankly I wouldn't let them park a tesco trolly. Also note that many of these courses are run on hard based substraits with mud and water above so the vehicles limits are never in question. Quite unlike the real world where a bog could be 8ft deep
You will learn basics (whats taught at the 4hr session) and you will be taught how to drive in almost every circumstance. Not only the safest option but how to read the terrain ahead and drive accordingly

Cheers for the advice guys. I'll look into them. I'm doing a trip to the Sahara so need desert experience but in the UK we struggle with these so someone advised me to just do a general off road one as the key points are avoiding trouble before it occurs

I'm in central London but happy to travel, I was even thinking of driving up to Scotland and doing some courses there whilst i'm staying with a comedian friend whilst the fringe festival is on in EdinburghPeople could be more specific it they knew roughly where you are in the country ... Jai has very good advice though ..

We are running a comp safari race at Devils pit on the 26th not much driving except marshalling and helping run the speed event

A distance away from you but i did a few days 4x4 off road driving course with Tim Kirk at Holmfirth (http://tkftraining.co.uk/vehicles/) , West Yorkshire about 8 years ago. It is a Lantra approved course, so it is very thorough and professional. Fantastic course in the 'Last of the summer wine' country although desert it is not. It was very expensive, but a qualification i suppose (you have to have a test at the end).

I had a days off road training at Northolt which is a bit nearer to you than Scotland. It was a present and I can't remember exactly which company it was but after a quick Google of "Land Rover Off Road Northolt" I think it was this one: All Terrain Services. The instructor knew his stuff, I learnt a lot and had a great day.
Get a land rover experience last minute and they are quite cheap. There is one in MK that's pretty good but if I were you I'd get a specific course on sand driving cos the clay you'll find in the south east is a completely different set of driving skills.

I did an off road recently as part of a friends 40th, it was kankku in windermere. Was a bit expensive as we hired 2 vehicles for the day for 5 of us. Did some good green laning, with some glorious routes over the hills. It inspired me to start green laning rather than pay and play sites...... forum search initiated now for green lanes around west yorks. As what Jai said, I learnt more in that day than many more hours on pay and play sites
