I have a 130 with a quadtec rear and have opened it up so you can get from the front to the rear, had planed to go to India in it and i think there is plenty of room, it also has a very large roof rack over the bonnet. The roof of the quadtec lifts so it is possible to stand up in the rear when cooking etc. Can send you pics if you wish.


I'd like to see some pics, I'm planning an African overland myself and am looking around for clever solutions to work out a good compromise between a 2WD van and a Landy...
 
Sounds a bit worrying as we are a family of 4 planning overland trip from UK to Australia using 110 300 tdi CSW - we are also confimed to camping and not hotels etc. at best of times. Hmmmmmmm!
 
A mate of mine had an Ex-Military Uni-Mog fitted with a Radio Box which basically is a small room.

It had desks and chairs which the radio operators sat at whilst transmitting/receiving but once removed or re-used you have a great base to work from.

Of course if you are 6ft 6 you may have a problem but if I had the money I would have jumped ship from the Land Rover to the Merc Ship ther and then!

Also you would benefit from awesome off-road capabilities.

My mate sells Uni-mogs and parts for them and took me on a trip to see a bunch of them in a local quarry...They put LR's to shame with the places they were going!!!

I agree a 110 is plenty big enough.
I am in the process of converting a 300tdi disco commercial for two of us on an overland trip to OZ, will be staying in low cost guest houses some of the time but for the rest I am building a 'shelf' at the bottom of where the windows would be. All the equipment goes safely below it, we sleep on top of it. Plenty of length too as it is a three door the front seats tilt forward allowing the shelf to extend so i can stretch my legs out.
 
Have you considered getting a Sankey trailer from ebay and kitting it as a camping trailer like the ozzy's use. If you can turn your hand to a bit of DiY or you know a few helpful engineering types you should be able to get one set up with a kitchen and roof tent (second hand) for under a grand. They tow well off road (when packed correctly) and are very robust.

Hi i would be intreseted in seeing some pictures and can i ask when and how are you getting to india?
 
speaking of 4wd campers , ive been lookin round at some possible 4wd expo vans and the 4wd toyota hi ace keeps jumping out at me.
a chassis cab version with a custom body on the back would make an ideal 4wd camper , nice and small , 4wd , a toyota (very important this) , easy on juice and comfortable to drive long distances.
an uprated suspension set up and all the usual off road mods and it would be just as capable as any land rover and probably just as strong.

the Mitsubishi canter/fuso is another strong contender although finding one in the uk might prove difficult.
also the nissan cabstar 4wd might be worth a look.

they way im thinking at the moment a landrover is the last vehicle id be looking at to go on a long trip in, they are cramped , noisy ,unreliable ,difficult to sleep in and the mpg they return relative to their size you can do a whole lot better.

ive seen people cross the sahara in vw busses.

Ive seen people climb mountains in flip flops and shorts. They do it but it's dangerous, risky and they look like TxxTs.
