Hi
Doing my first oil change on the freelander this weekend,

Just want to check what people use to catch the oil when draining as 6.8 litres is a lot and that's more than the buckets I have!!!

Thanks

a big bucket :)

actually i use a plastic washing up bowl - oil just comes short of the top then i transfer it to empty oil cans using a jug and funnel

Hello bud I use an old 25ltr plastic drum cut in half so you can undo the cap to pour the old stuff out better had on for ages and I've cut a flap out of the under tray so don't have to lift the truck to change it. much quicker!!

A standard builders bucket should be fine, the one I use takes 2 gallons which is more than enough!

Which oil brand are you using to replace the old?

I was thinking of doing an oil change, I havent done one on my hippo yet. I tend to change my oil & filter every 6 months with the car tax. Tax was done a week or two ago so I should get round to doing it.

Everyone makes it sound like a total ballache, especially with the under body tray thingy fitted, I havent actually had a chance to get under mine and have a look, but likely you have to drill out rivets? What kind of ****-poor design is that? What the #### were landrover thinking? Or was it "haha now people will HAVE to take them to land rover dealer garages so we can charge them triple the price for a simple oil change!"

Reading through some of the threads on here, people seem to be suggesting various different types of oil, n halfrauds book is never bloody right, it always just recommends the most epensive oil they have in stock! Anyone got any proper reccomendations for good oil? Is stuff like Castrol Magntec actually worth the extra money? (Mines a 2003 Freelander 1, 1.8 petrol)

If you copper grease the bolts & change the bumper screws for stainless then removing the under tray takes 10 minutes max .
For my TD4 stock up on 5w-30 Castrol magnatec when Halfords have it on offer for £17.50 .
