Hi all, I am gradually getting through the list of 'things to do' on my 2000 'w' FL 1.8 petrol!!
Its got an odd noise from the front left under the bonnet. Kind of like a deep rattling / vibration or something loose? Only when engine under heavy load, and only between 1750rpm and 2000rpm in a too tall gear (ie 4th or 5th and pulling hard.) ( Not yet checked other gears).
Could this be a symptom of a damaged IRD, or imminent IRD failure? the rear prop was taken off by me to preserve the life of these 'delicate' components.
I've checked the exhaust and heat sheild for rattles, and it seems ok.
What sound does a failing or knackered IRD make please?

Them 1.8's like to try and shake themselves to pieces if you run them in too high a gear for the road speed... thats my experience of them anyway - thats not just freelanders, drove a mates rover 418 cabrio and that was the same - and that ain't got an IRD so, I reckon you'll be fine.

Hi

Did you ever get to the bottom of this? I have what sounds like an identical problem on our newly acquired freelander 1.8 - although I cant replicate the rattle in 4th its definately there in 5th when on full throttle up small inclines etc.

Its booked into the dealer where we bought it, but I dont want fobbing off to be landed with a big bill once the warranty has expired!!
Cheers

Could it be a heat shield, these tend to rattle with age as the mounts begin to rust away.

Got the same symptoms in mine. Mate of mine has also the same. We both got L-series diesels. Tried everything, but still got the noise. Mostly in 4th an 5th at low revs when engine takes a bit of strain.

Hi, I believe it is a bearing inside the IRD. I think it was Northern Irelander who suggested this. However, it does'nt seem to be getting any worse, so I'm not too worried about it...yet!!
The odd thing is, and you all may like to check your vehicle, that the noise is only there when the entire rear prop is off. ie when there is no load on the IRD rear output.

Now, slid under the car yesterday, and grabbed hold of the rear IRD output flange, and tried to twist it. There is the only slightest movement, combined with a metallic 'clonk' which sounds very much like the 'noise'. I am sure this is movement within the IRD and not the flange slipping on the output shaft.
Cheers, Russ

Maybe running mondo has caused more damage that running 4x4.:p

Either that or whats left of the prop/VCU is slapping about, as there is no load on it as you say.

Thanks for that - I am almost certain it is in 4wd mode but will get under the car tomorrow to check its all connected up.

Its booked into the garage on Friday for them to investigate - I was hoping it might be clutch rattle or something as the clutch is very stiff as well - maybe two birds with one stone was optimistic!

I will let you know what they find and mention the IRD but as we havent had it a week yet I wont be letting this rest until its fixed!

Any diagnosis from your garage?
I think i may have the same noise in my 2000 1.8. Between 90 and 100 kph I can hear a whirring noise from the left hand side in the engine compartment. It makes no differerence which gear I drive in but it goes away when coasting.

Nothing from the garage yet - they are due to give me the Freelander back on Monday so will let you know then - in the meantime I have a Citroen C2 to drive around in :(

I dont have any whirring noises, just a rattle which sounds like a heatshield rattling and only under load.

I could only get it to do it in 5th, but I can do it in 4th now as well at very low revs. Garage is convinced its clutch related but I am not sure - we will see on Monday when they have replaced whatever they are replacing to get the clutch to work properly!

Any news yet ???

No news!

I am going to call them tomorrow for a progress update. I cant see how its going to take them 4 days to change a clutch and slave cylinder!

I wouldnt normally be bothered but its my wifes Freelander (and mine when it goes wrong!!) and as I took it in I had to sign for their courtesy car so only I can drive it. So, she has my A4 and I am driving 100 miles a day in a 1.4 Citroen C2 :( I have 300 miles to do on Monday and not sure I can cope!

Clutch has been replaced - its like a different car, however the rattle is still there under load in 5th.

I have pointed it out to the garage and going to see if it gets any worse - as it sounds exactly like a heat shield rattling, then I am hopeful that is what it is :D

Will keep an eye on it!
