Fitted a heated windscreen few months ago, wired in using a Blue Sea aux fuse box which is wired directly into the battery.

Fitted an Anderson plug yesterday which is wired directly into the battery.

Some how when I turn on the heated windscreen it blows the 20amp fuse for the heater blower? Which in turn cuts power to the 12v fag lighter.

Im baffled. Any ideas?

Going to remove the anderson plug tomorrow see if that is the problem but I cant see how!

wonder if you've got any stray earths ,wires somewhere , or if the main wiring loom has been messed around with in the past

assume it done it before u fitted the Anderson

as u say does seem strange

ps dont forget as ur only up the road , if u ever need a second pair of hands plse give me a shout ,

So nothing is spliced off existing wiring? Is it earthed to the chassis or back to the fuse box?

I had an electric fan once that when you turned it on it cut all power to the engine and the Landy would stall.

Electrics are a wizards game.

can be fun , as u, I can only think if the old wiring has been messed around with , as there must be a connection somewhere straying across , via an old link wire maybe ,

wonder if it's crossing an old relay ???

my old series 3 , turned the lights on and the dashboard then began to smoke behind the speedo up Orpington high street , managed to just stop it catching fire

ripped the whole thing out and made a new wiring loom and God almighty could see where someone in the past had spliced it here and everywhere bypassing fuses etc

scared the life out of me that's for sure

Cheers, The original loom has been played with a little but its all pretty much disconnected...

Screen is earthed to the bulkhead

What makes this even harder is the fuse box is underneath a bucket seat and it appears ive lost the thread on one of the fixings!

You need to give us a bit more info. Have you put a relay in the screen circuit, how is it wired ? How is the switch wired ? and the fuse and the earth etc, plus what vehicle and year.

Ahh gotcha! Think i took the ignition live for the switch from the fag lighter.

I did have an idea but a long shot, i moved the aux fuse box to make it more secure in the battery box but I think i may have move it so one of the terminals is touching part of the box.

First check your aux fuse box, if that is ok remove the ign live feed from the cig lighter and connect it straight to the battery with a 20A fuse in line, Switch on the screen and if the fuse blows check the permanent live to the screen control unit, if that is good the controller is probably faulty.

Found the problem! The live from the windscreen was touching on one of the cables from the fag lighter and thus blowing the fuse

Not sure if they melted or rubbing though.

Ok got some pics, jury is out to you guys.

Loom came from the Mobile center company so I assume it must be correctly rated...

Indeed. Ive wrapped the offending cable in leccy tape and moved them well away from each other, hopefully stop it happening again. Would like to know if it melted or rubbed though..

Looks almost as if they've got pinched or snagged somehow. Have they got caught on that metal thing in one of the pictures that looks like the holder for a radio/CD? I find with mine that there's not much room for a full depth entertainment unit in the TD5 dash and the wires can get a bit squashed.

Thats my thinking, there is no space! Had to modify the switch housings so they actually fit with the DIN in there
