Just wondered if anyone else had experienced something similar, its on my 1998 1.8 Freelander, its used every day and only happens for a short time about every 10 days to 2 weeks.

After slowing down from a higher speed to a stop, in a straight line, when driving off again I am getting a rotational rubbing/grating type noise that increases with road speed until about 30 mph then stops, only lasts a bit then goes away for a while so difficult to replicate

I checked out the brakes and found one of the disc dust/backing plates rusted and almost touching the brake disc so thought that was it and removed it but its still making the noise.

I am guessing possibly a VCU bearing is on the way out but is there anything else

It doesn't really matter - just get it back in the tratter boy's cab, beside the 'Boar Mate' spray - before he notices it's gone.

define 'rubbing noise' are we talking a gentle moan, a couple grunts or a full on 'oh god yes'?

I had a growl/drone/rub noise slowing down, stoped when i went over 30....grit in my vcu bearings..fitted new GKN bearings and noise was gone.

Check the anti-roll bar on the front. I had an end stop drop off and allow the roll bar to slide sideways and foul the suspension.

Amusingly it passes an MOT with this fault

I had forgotten about that my n/s front hub was quite a bit hotter than the o/s and I did grease the sliders and re-seat the pads but that wouldnt help a sticking piston - well check it out again, thanks

ha ha - just a rubbing grating noise - as if a stone was stuck between the caliper and disc or the dust plate making intermittent contact with the disc.

Thanks, I do suspect the bearings are starting to get noisy

Mantamad let me know how you get on as I had this type of noise on the way to work this morning :-( sounds like its the front offside area thou.

I had a similar problem for quite a while. Just happened whilst pulling up from around 30mph to stop. It sounds exactly like a disc pad worn to the steel, but when I checked them there was plenty of pad left and the discs, whilst worn, were not scored. I bought new pads though, and it stopped, for a while, then started again. I must have had the wheels off 3 times and checked everything several times. I even removed the discs and skimmed the wear ridges off on my lathe just in case. Still did it, so I thought maybe it was some strange incompatibility between the discs and the pads. Eventually I bought new discs and pads, and changed the whole lot together. So far, so good, been using them for about 6 weeks now with no nasty graunching noises. A strange success I think.
