Hi i have a D900 code reader (£20 fleabay) that says it reads Land Rover diesels 2004 onwards and my Freelander is 04 but will not detect it. Do I need a Different scanner ?

The scanner maker is probably quoting model year, so worth checking as your motor may be a 2003 model year but registered in 2004.

Vin and reg number. Ring LR dealer, they should have all your vehicles details on their database.

The 10th digit of your chassis number should be a number, and the 11th, the letter A.
The 10th digit relates to the model year, a 1 is a 2001, 2 is 2002 and so on

That said though, an OBD scanner will only read emissions related codes. These codes are the same for all cars after 2001. Not ideal for a Freelander TBH...

Thanks Mikey .This is not even being recognised to read emissions code so could be a fault somewhere. The A on my vin is the 10th along and number 5 before it and number 4 after it so it must be 2004 . Thanks again i will hook it up and test again later . Drew

Have a recount, the letter A is the 11th on all LR's between 2001-2009. The number before is the model year, and the 6 numbers after is the ID of the car

If you can plug your tester into another car, this will confirm if it is an issue with the tester, or your car

You are right it is the 11th with the 5 just before so its 05 . I was reading the VIN from old M.O.T,S and they all have a digit missing before the A . Must be a computer fault as its the same on all the M.O.T'S .Will try another car like you say to test the scanner .

I have a late 2006 TD4, I bought a D900 which couldn't communicate with the ECU. I returned it to the seller. He tried it on other cars and said it worked.

Scaaner suppliers quote it will work on diesel 2004 onwards. What they actually mean is all diesels 2004 onward have to have odbii access available to meet certain standards. Their scanner will read said vehicles with this access. So it will work by default... Not that it has been tested against said vehicle...
