I have a 2003 TD4 and decided to connect an ELM 327 to it and see what it gave me. The software I've used is torque and this seems to be OK, I also tested the ELM in my other car (Audi) and it worked correctly.
The problem area is temperature, all the temps read -40!
Has anyone seen this problem before? I have seen people on Rover Rons forum ask this question but no one has answered it over there.
The reason I wanted to check my temp readings is because my temp gauge on the dash often reads top of the red zone, when the engine is cold!

This does show that a cheap ELM 327 Bluetooth does connect to 2003 TD4 and gives some readings.

The fault codes are clear.

Any ideas?

Not played with it too much. It connects and reads coolant temperature on mine (53 plate TD4). Mine doesn't have an external air temp - so not tried to see what that will read if you try. Can you get revs and throttle position working? I had all this working fine. You look to have all dials at zero, I tried mine with engine running.
Also tried on a perguot 206 (spit spit) It read some stuff from this but MAF read zero. So not really sure how good they are.

I get the same -40 reading on occasion. I've no idea why though but I suspect it's Torque? It's almost like some of the data stream is missing, some live data comes though like throttle position and ignition advance but both coolant and inlet air temp show -40°C. I find removing the elm327 and restarting Torque works sometimes but not others.
I've a V6 Freelander and a ZS180 and both suffer this same fault which makes me think it's the app or the elm327?

Is there anything like the elm327 that works with iPhone/ipad. I only see them for android apps.

That's nonsense

Can you enhance on that please? Only because i'm thinking I might go to the I phone when it's upgrade time. The guy I spoke to in a well know phone shop told me that the I phone Blue Tooth is restricted to certain approved devices. Is that not correct?
 
Blue tooth on apple is a bit funny, like an iPhone won't pick up an iPad unless you are running a program that requires Bluetooth. But the iPhone picks up my sat nav ok my Sony viao laptop plus my iPad picks up it non apple Bluetooth keyboard.
 
Strange my iPhone 4 works great with my aging Parrot.

There are a few iPhone OBDii apps. They don't seem to specify a particular bluetooth dongle, just "works with a bluetooth OBDii dongle" so I'm guessing any should be ok!

Just don't buy one from China!
 
The problem is unlikely to be with your reader.

I have a Scanguage2 permanently connected to the OBD port.

Frequently it informs me that the coolant temp, and the air intake temp are -40C.

After a few miles/minutes it usually reads correctly.

If I switch off at a filling station for example, I get the -40 for a while after I restart.

It's not predictable though - some days it read correctly with a minute of starting the engine from cold.

When I use it on other vehicles I don't get this 'delay' fault at all.

I've just learnt to live with it on the Freelander - and now don't expect to get accurate temp readings right away.

I paid for the torque pro so now can log as I go along.

Just went for a play with it connected the temperature did read. interestingly I added the eco widget and I have a green machine even though I thrashed it when traffic allowed. Green peace will be pleased to see a 4x4 as green as mine

I've used to log function many times since changing my engine just so I can be sure the cooling system is doing what it should.

This is the latest.

The above from Wikipedia. The bit in bold is key though. The iPhone is a Bluetooth device and is qualified by the standards etc blah...

Personally I've never had any difficulty is connecting my iPhone to anything that is properly Bluetooth compatible. The things I can do once connected are limited only by the feature set supported by the [connected to] device.

I've never seen -40º on my Scanguage 2 whilst in use in the Freelander. I'm sure I've read something somewhere (in fact I thought it was something you'd posted) about the -40º and a cause and fix for it.

I'll see if I can find it and post it here.
 
Here are my readings: still no temp?

Will monitor over time and try other apps and computer progs.

All so far have shown -40.

I know that ( iOBD2 ) is a free app for iphone, Not sure if it works though as i have a 300tdi :) No OBD2 S**t, although have order a dongle one for my dads v8

Just ordered an ELM 327 for £7.50 with disc, not sure what software, will let u's know. Andrew
 
Bluetooth connection is restricted in part by Apple and therefore Bluetooth OBD readers will not wok with iPad/iPhone.
I purchased an OBDLink MX WiFi to work with my iPad/iPhone. This unit has not been out long and suffers from disconnections at the moment but OBDLink has informed me a firmware update is a high priority.
I have a 2002 Freelander 1 1.8L petrol. I use DashCmd with it and most of the dashboard works (A lot more than I expected for my old car).
Apart from the disconnect issue it works very well.

I used it to diagnose a problem on a 2005 Ford Focus 2.0L Duratec-HE.
The code was P2138
Throttle/Pedal Position Sensor/Switch "D"/"E" Voltage Correlation.
The part has been ordered, we will see if it was correct when its fitted.

So far I am happy with it.
