Erm at the risk of sounding a total knobber, how do rivnuts work?
I need to fit some mudflaps and have a packet but they don't look anything like what's fitted already!!!
Seem to have nut/bolt/Brass Cup/Washer
Searched other threads and there was mention of rivet gun!
Do I need some pop rivets as well?
n.b I am a bit fick

course yer can buy a hand operated tool which is a lot cheaper and most likey availible on flea bay

yup - but the guy want to know how they work - that showed method of fixing - they then work same as any captive nut. You are correct in mentioning several different tooling options - one of which is a bolt and washer of the correct size;) - other tools are shown here..

why of course he wanted to know how they work and how to install them. as he wuz unaware of how they work and how to install them he could easily think that the only way to install them was to use an expensive poomatic tool such as was in yer fine link. I was mearly informing him that a cheaper and more cost efffective( for the casual user) option was available.
I also think that if he was to ask on this fine forum he may be able to borrow a hand operated tool from someone wot dun got one illreddy

i concur entirely, Monsier Slob. We do try and help where we can, dont we?
It might help if we knew where the afformentioned party resided, what?

not only that - but who, in their right mind, would want to go to Kernow, without an armed escort and a quick escape route?

so? yu gonna loan im one then, Trewy?
aint gorra rivnut gun.
gorra pop rivetter though - thas what I used ter fit my mud flaps - 5mm pop rivets, through SS penny washers into the cross member. bin on there 2 yrs and aint fell off yet.

Thanking you most kindly for your help chaps.
I will have to try an locate a tool of some description (Look in the mirror perhaps)........
I suspect the fixings on there already are just rivets as they don't have a bolt head showing.
FYI Am not Proper/Real Cornish just married in adding to the gene pool;)

Mek one out of a bit of flat bar, a clearance ole, a bolt of the same size as the rivnut an long enough to go through the ole an all the way through the rivnut, a washer to suit the bolt an a spanner to suit the bolt. Owt 8mm an under you can hold the bar with one hand an tighten the bolt up with the other hand, 10mm an up an you'd be better off clamping the bar onto summat handy to stop it spinning.

Have a look at this guide from X Eng on how to fit without special tools

Thats essentially wot I did but my nut with the thread drill out was a bit of flat bar, I also cleaned the nutsert and the hole it goes in with thinners and used loctite.

wot Grunt sais. I bought a "tool" off ebay for 9 quid, meant to set blind riv-nuts, broke on first go, stripped its threads.

So I took the tool tightening spanner off the thing and used IT to set the bolts in the way Grunt suggested. worked a treat, and that was with M8 steel anes an a'. The fact you can hold the end of it in one hand stops the rivet nut rotating, if you have the bar immediately next to the rivnut, in the rivnut, bar, washer, bolt, washer, bolt set-up.
