Resurrecting this post., Thanks to a GENIUS on here (i will look up the post and put him forward for an award...) I got the Ecu/Key? control Module thing out of the old gal....that's a year the poor girl has been sitting. I started but gave up removing the Dash, and glad I did. Seems you can remove the control unit without having to do that (Photo below, which is on the later Freelander 1's, Slightly older ones I think pre 2004, have a white unit.) .
Take out central console/stereo as far as possible, and the plastic around steering wheel. I took Speedo panel out as well, but that to change the remote key module.
You can see this pain in the ass Module looking through where stereo was and to the right.
there are 2 bolts/nuts. You can see the one on the right side of it through stereo access, and a 10mm spanner, lot of cursing, and once you loosen it, should be able to spin it of with your finger. The other 10mm Nut is the one that you usually have to remove the dash to get at. But (Name to follow when I edit this) advised me, remove the drink/cup holder, and you can access the other 10mm from that point, using a socket tool that has a flexible end part.
I got the attached screwdriver thing from B and Q a while ago, It is for drill bits, but I had a 3/4 square socket end that fits the socket end for drill bits as well. I bought both years ago thinking , "i could use that set up some day.." Crystal Ball was on the mark that day.
Other items needed, which he didn't advise, is a willing doner with the same blood group, cause you will probably need a pint or two..
Now once you have the nuts off, is where it gets interesting.
You need to prize it out to clear the bolts. Long flat screwdriver worked for me. I tried swearing ang shouting at it, but that won't work.
You need to move the module until you can access it and remove the Cable Plug.
That is interesting part , and where the blood loss starts...How the hell do land rover make plastic parts that are sharper than a fecking razor.
I found getting it pulled down was near impossible, so a lot of swear words,(many not in any dictionary) and I worked it down a bit, and sideways. It then goes through a bit of a space over to the steering column. At that point, you need a small flat screw driver to prise the plug of, which is also interesting, plug goes sideways to come off, and there are clips on one end you have to prise to get it sideways.
This was easy to type, but I spent a good 20 minutes moving it any way I could o get it across.
The plug then pulls out and your "Free" (sung to the Tune "Free Nelson Mandela" by The Specials")
Don't intend to put the replacement module back in the same place, just going to plug it it and duct tape it up somewhere.
Tomorrow, I look for the replacement key, Module, Ecu/locks, fuel cap etc I bought a year ago, (In a box somewhere

Battery is charging, and if the land rover Gods smile on me, and the blood transfusion takes, I should get the old girl started. Then finding/sourcing/ordering and putting back all the parts I took off her for J Lo
She probably wont speak to me....
I am going to take a few photos when putting this back together, and do a separate post about this. Hopefully will help any other poor souls who lose their keys. And hopefully wont be another year..
