I want to progress from the organised Land Rover adventure day type trips to Green Laning but obviously there are lots of pitfalls and things to look out for. I'd like to think of myself as a respectful 4x4 owner and I'm keen to 'do the right thing'

Is there a particular Green Lane organisation I should join (GLASS is the one I'm aware of) and does anyone have any hints and tips for building up to going Green Laning?

Even better if anyone is within 50 miles of the Manchester area and fancies another Landy tagging along to gain some experience, I'd be well up for that.

I dont think you need to really 'build up to green laning'

Rule 1 - dont go on your own unless you know the lane well or you have a winch.

Best bet is to find a local club/group of owners who you can go out with and learn the ropes, its the quickest and easiest way and far better than reading stuff on the interweb :)

All you really need are some AT tyres and away you go. Obviously recovery points are a must incase the worst happens and some decent straps (4-5m ones will be fine) Depending if there are any fords in the area you will benefit from a wading kit and a snorkel.

Just get involved and learn along the way :)

Have a look in this section there may be a thread about your area

Wot he said

Apart from, just because you gotta winch dosent mean ull never get stuck. If your in a field, what you gonna attach it too?

There are loads of people around manchester way on here and your not far from the peak district.

So perhaps not as mysterious and scary as I had thought. I've got a 110 with a 2", MT's, Snorkel, Dislocation Cones, underbody protection so fairly capable. Just looking for that inroad into.

What you waiting for :D thats good enough to handle the toughest lanes. you just need to find some locals, find the lanes, check they havent got TROs and have some fun :)

Waiting for a local to make the offer?!?! lol

I've made a few approaches to people for green lane routes or memory maps data and people are very touchy and protective about it! I'm sure I'll get there eventually!

I am in wigan, and in a similar position, hoping to find someone I can go out with, I am a total novice and got an unmodded P38, where a bouts are you?
I joined GLASS and also got access to Trailwise database of lanes, its quite useful, but was hoping for someone more experienced to go out with,

We could always go out together at some point if you wanted too and have a look at some of them, I know there isn't many around here though, there is one up riving ton I think which is legal I was going to go have a look up there

I'm in Hale. I've done a lot of pay and play days so I'm pretty good with single obstacles and the like but I want to do a days driving where you actually get somewhere and see things, if that makes any sense. Happy to go out with anyone to be honest!

Brilliant. Thanks. I did loads of searching but I think I was using green lane and not so much my local area

Yup. they will be. :D:p

Its because it takes alot of work to find lanes and make sure there legal. And that with all the good will in the world people always say there not out to ruin lanes. how do you know which are the decent people and which arent?

Would you trust anyone to look after your daughter??? i thought not. :D

I found that once i started going out with people and driving responsibly etc and started to show an interest(buy some OS maps) That others were more than willing to help me learn. And then you can plot your own lanes and swap with them. ;)

Like TR said, wadda you waiting for. Your motor will be fine.

Have fun.

just keep i eye on here theres loads of trip's going on did my first laning trip last year done 15 so fare made loads of new freinds to

Hi Ellebarto I am also new to this and looking for similar around Manchester but couldnt get to their meetings due to work so still looking did you find anything else?

I don't think you need to go to there meetings to attend an event. Just drop them a line and I'm sure they will hook you up.

This is all strictly my own personal opinion.

Some of the guys are great some of the guys are weird losers. Unfortunately its pretty much a 20/80 split. They go out once a month as a rule and after a few trips most of my mates realised they were so badly run you spent half of your day getting started, lost or chatting and not much covering of ground.

The meetings are one of the most cringe worthy things I have ever had the misfortune to attend and is probably why most people who attend are never seen again. As a starting club to see what's out there its OK. Personally I'd rather eat my own toenails!!!

There are more active clubs who are out far more often and have generally a more relaxed attitude but you have to search them out a bit. Google is your friend.
