My 2006 TD4 Freelander seems to be really slow at moving off when stopped.


It’s worse when it’s cold, which I can appreciate but when warmed up it only slightly improves.

Also I can hear a whistling noise when I accelerate and decelerate. I always thought it was the turbo but my Mum's 2006 TD4 Freelander doesn't make the whistling noise and pulls away from junctions/stopped really quickly.

Any ideas?

yeah...you could ask your mum to teach you to drive properly.... :p

OR...check yout intercooler / turbo hoses for small splits....although if you had that, you should notice more smoke out of the back too. There are many threads with these hoses covered and it's a common problem.

Are the hoses easy to replace?

They are cheap and easy to change, so should be no problem. There are several threads on here with pics e.t.c.

Working at the mo so cant track them down, just try a search for intercooler hoses.
 
You done your crankcase filter and turbo vent? EGR? My car was hesitant until I sorted out the above. Made a massive difference. Obviously check hoses too. :D

I had a quick check yesterday - I was looking in totally the wrong place...

Think this is a tomorrow jobby.
 
Well I have done some work on it.

Ref the photo located here Engine - Land Rover Photos

1: I took off that hose, there are no holes in it. However there was a lot of black gunky stuff in there. Cleaned that out.

2: Took off that end of the hose as well, more wet black stuff, not as gunky though - cleaned that too.

3: Took off that little hose bit, same as 2, black wet stuff. All cleaned up.

4: There is some small sensor in there, didn't touch that though is covered in black wet stuff. Is that the MAF sensor? Is it meant to be wet?

I put it all back together and the car is really responsive again...
 
Maybe clean out EGR valve and fit "pipe & peg mod "
Mine was sluggish and EGR was 50% blocked with gunge .
