I have just bought a manual 99 td5 disco but i am not sure if its been chipped/mapped. I drove two others before this one which seemed to be really numb at low revs. The one i bought is very nippy up to about 2k revs, but then just seems to be a lot of noise and revs but no real go up to 4.5k. So it doesn't really have any overtaking pace. Is mine standard and the others where suffering from sticky turbo's or a dodgy sensors.

Can anyone tell me how it should drive, or lives near chorley/preston and could drive my car to see if its stock or not. Or offer me any acceleration times from 30to50 or 50to70 for example.

The previous owner doesn't know if it was chipped. I am not sure he even knew it was a discovery but thats another story.

sounds like it isnt, as they do benifit from remapping at revs above 2000 when there on boost they can move a bit, try mike at dynachip if you want it doing, yours though will have the non flashable ecu, so will need a new chip soldering in or an ecu swap for a flashable one

When Mike done my 90 he replaced the ecu with one he had already put a chip in. Over 2000revs mine really shifts, no problem overtaking.assuming disco would be the same.

Acceleration times from 30to50 or 50to70 according to my books road test info for a TD5 are, manual 8.5 sec and 10.9 sec the auto is a second slower in both bands and a V8 is only a 1.5 second faster in the 50to70 band.

the previous owner reckoned ours had been chipped but I have nothing to compare with so am not sure!

It does pull very strongly from 1800 - 3000 revs though, and on to 4000 if I really want to!

Try changing gears at low revs. If its been chipped it should change gear at just over 1000rpm with no problem, all the way up to 5th gear. If it hasn't been chipped it'll struggle. Also see how responsive it is in 5th gear, travelling between 30mph and 60mph it should accelerate cleanly and swiftly (well, swiftly for a 2ton brick) without you having to change down. If its not too responsive it probably hasn't been chipped.

Prior to chipping my TD5 suffered from lousy power bands in the gears, you had to get it to 2000rpm to get a good gear change between 2nd and 3rd and it drove sluggishly. Since chipping it drives more like a speedy car, quick changes at low revs, it only struggles in 5th gear when it drops below 1000rpm, great torque.

If you get it chipped definitely get mike at Dynachip to do it. He did mine - it was a quick change over of the ECM - he brought one with him. I think it only cost £250 and he came to me to do it - top service. Also, while he was hooked up to the computer to reprogramme everything he did some quick diagnostics and found the MAF needed changing. Told me how to do it too.

You really can't get better service.

Thanks for the replies. I am thinking there may be something wrong with my truck. I have loads of power up to 2k revs and then its rubbish. I can drive round and change gear without touching 2k rpm easly with it in 5th at 30mph. In the other 2 td5's i drove they wouldn't handle being in 5th at 30 mph.
The motorway slip road is up hill near me and if a ring its neck i can just about get to 60 for joining. But when I am sat at a steady 60 and put my foot down that little bit more it nips up to 70 in no time. It seems if you acceleration hard it doesn't want to! But when you change gear the turbo makes a real good noise under hard acceleration. (my brothers heavily tuned seat leon tdi makes a very similar noise, but his noise is much louder than mine). I think I will whip the MAP and MAF out this weekend and see if they are dirty.

I took everything apart today to clean it all. But a broke one of the thin wires/elements on the air mass when i was cleaning it! Heavy handed idiot!! I know!!

But when i put it all back together it drives just the same. So i have ordered a new maf. So hopefully it will go like stink when i have my new one. It also seems to have been using to much fuel, 150 miles to half a tank seems excessive to me. Which prob down to the maf.
