There appears to be a Land Rover Centre in the location he gives

it would be in the service history, if it doesn’t have one then you’ve got even more bargaining leverage as in my view it should have a decent history for that sort of price.
Good point, I'll check that over with him before I take it any further!

I think he's a bit more than just a mechanic, if you check his other stuff for sale, the JCB for example
It says the price is plus VAT and he will supply a VAT invoice, now please correct me if I'm wrong is that not a business seller.

How much of a warranty is he offering you.
Did you check all the areas that were waxoyled, by checking I don't mean looking at them
Don't want to **** on your parade but tread carefully, its a lot of money if it turns out to be a duck egg.

Don't worry harsh advice often pays off in the long run Yes everything seemed very sound. I knocked the chassis and it sounded good all round. Some surface rust under the waxoyl but no trapped mud or holes, do You think I need to check further? Also warranty is something I haven't asked about but I will add it to the list of questions! In terms of vat I don't think he is charging vat as I am not buying as a business so I wouldn't need to claim anything back. However in the listing he assures that no extra cost is to be added for VAT. If he isn't charging vat right I don't think that is my problem, correct me if I am wrong?

Good point! Looking more for a csw rather than a hardtop and also can't stretch much past £7,000 or so.

Unfortunately, those two statements may prove contradictory.
Because so many people want station wagons, good ones tend to sell very well.
Hard tops, you will often get a better condition vehicle for less money, and it is not that difficult to fit windows and seats in the back.
That will not apply if you want to use the vehicle in the LEZ, though. ;)

Regarding the VAT question. I was simply pointing out that is some transactions he is issuing VAT invoices, in the one your interested he is not.
Appears to me that he's purporting to be a private seller with yours and that tends to suggest to me that you will have no warranty and no come back should things go South.

I see what you mean! What would be the cost of seats windows and seals though? Also would adding windows be considered a modification by insurers as that is half the problem for me?

It all depends on your insurer.
Myself, I have never been charged extra for modifications, but the modifications were always sensible, and safe, and I am middle aged, with full no claims, and a long record with the same rural insurer.
Same may not apply for everyone.
Also relating to insurance, a glance at your page informs me that you are 16 years old. Have you looked into how much an insurer is going to charge you for insurance on a Defender when you become of age to drive?

Okay I understand. As he is offering to fix most things and put it through an mot no extra charge that is more than most private sellers but I will still ask if he would a warranty as I'd like to have something to fall back on!

Yes and it's certainly not cheap. Around £2,500 was one quote from a comparison site, I am ringing round specific insurers now for tailored quotes. I am very set on a defender now though as it has been in my mind for at least 5 years! I will just have to wince and grit my teeth for insurance but it will be worth it! At least there are some companies that will insure me!

Look at the NFU, and other specialists. You may get some money off for limited mileage, or for volunteering to have an electronic tracker in the vehicle, or to accept a curfew, or both.

As you say, whatever you do, it is unlikely to be cheap for the first few years.

Yes, unfortunately! Do you have any other insurers in mind that you could recommend for price, if not then don't worry as I know it is completely different for each person? I have heard Adrian flux should be good.

You could try a PM to Flux, they are a forum sponsor, and you are the kind of driver they like to insure.

Google search rural insurers in your area, contact your local NFU. You may have to join NFU Countryside before they are interested, but I think it is only 30 quid a year.
