Well I am just about getting there with this thing, well thought I was.

I can't get it to turn over, not even a clicking of the starter solenoid.

In the following order:

Battery fully charged.
Earth from battery to transfer box connected.
Earth from starter to block connected
Earth from bottom of starter to just below bulkhead connected.
Earths work with a test light.
Power to the starter.
I only get one light on the dashboard when I turn on the ignition switch (Battery Light)
When you turn the ignition switch to start you also get the glow plug light and the brake fluid warning light.
Starter was working perfect when removed and has only done 2500 miles.

I am still expecting it to be an earth fault some where but could be anything I suppose.

If I had hair I would be pulling it out now.

Not to make you out to be daft but have you checked the red and white trigger wire on the starter and its condition and also the spade itself on the starter? are yiou getting 12v to this when you put the key to the start position?

again not making you out to be stupid :)

How come you're not getting the oil pressure light coming on as well, if it's the first time you're starting it leave the fuel solenoid connector off and spin the engine a few times to get the oil flowing before you go ahead and start it. I've got a spare starter if you're stuck for things to try but as said above check the condition of the spade connection

The trigger wire is connected all ok, TBH not checked it with the key in the start position.

Engine doesn't even spin. I will check the spade connector and see if there is any power there. I have 2 spare starters lol.

Right, I and swmbo have been out in the cold wet dark night and just checked that there is power to the trigger wire when the ignition key is turned.

If there's power to the trigger wire and power to the starter then there's no reason why it shouldn't turn over. Does the engine turn over by hand? You haven't left the locking pin in the flywheel or something silly like that?

Engine turns over fine by hand so no pins left in, could the starter have just stopped working?

Take a wire from battery +ve to the little wire on starter and this will tell you if it is working.

Seems a bit to coincidental to me Ivan but not impossible. Have you got constant 12v going to the main terminal on the starter motor?

12 volt at the main terminal and power to the spade connector on turning the ignition.

I have just been out and given the starter a bit of smack with the end of the jack handle and that made the solenoid click when I tried the key again but not turning over still. I can now hear the relay clicking in so I am going to start with the wiring and recheck all that is ok and then swap the starter, but not until the weekend.

I'm about on Saturday if you need a hand or owt, it can be more enjoyable fixing someone else's tratter than my own :p

If I get stuck I may well give you a shout, but sometimes it is just nice to sort things.

Well I am the happiest I have been for a long while, it runs. Very noisy, smokey and smelly at the moment but she runs.

Well done, what's smokey the exhaust fumes or burning oil/crap off the exhaust manifold /engine?

It was too dark to see to be honest, but I think it is exhaust fumes but the exhaust isn't fitted yet so it was just coming out the down pipe.
