I love my Series, the thought of getting it to go where most Defenders can't is part of the the challenge. I've changed the engine to a 2.5 N/A, but it will always stay on leaves. Anybody can have a Defender, I can do it with a Series.
 
I am planning on keeping mine as standard as possible, but I admit that I would like to make it a bit easier to live with and I'll probably fit a RR or a Disco diff at some point.

I certainly don't agree with people slapping a Defender front end on a series! I love the look of the front end on a series!

I don't object to people modding their series Landys. That's up to them. However, if someone new asks me I usually warn them that chucking a non LR engine in it can drop the vehicles value.

I remember seeing a Nissan engined series on Ebay for months.

It'll have a v8! Since the very early days series 1's II's and III's have been modified by enthusiats. Personally a good modified motor is great unfortunatly alot are thrown together and are as Pikey says ****e!
 
I'm also with Oldseadog on this one. I bought a Series 3 for a bit of motoring nostalga. I am keeping her as original as possible, although she now has a galvanised chassis, galv bulkhead and front panel, so I guess the purists would still frown upon her! The 2.25 soot chucker remains and always will.

I suspect that in many years to come, the models with original type engines and parts will be the ones which appreciate in value best. The more 'bastardised' Series around, the rarer and more desirable 'original' ones will be as a proper classic.

Each to their own of course but if I wanted a faster more refined Landy, I would have bought a Defender, Disco or similar. :)

:):)If it wasn't for Willies Jeep the concept of the Series vehicles would not have been born, if it was not for the triler boys chopping rangie chassis and fitting series body's the idea of a coil sprung series (which is all a defender is) would not of been thought about by Land Rover and a Discovery was to fill a gap in the market. At the end of the day they are all Land Rover products in one form or another evolution you mite say or a big boys mecano kit as I have often been told. We should be proud to own a pice of automotive history in one form or another, none of them are ****e they have there good and quirky points like all vehicles so lets stop bickering and enjoy our vehicles.

This subject could run and run. I keep mine almost standard but I am sure in a few years time the conversions will be deemed "Period Mods".
We had issues years ago in the 750 motor club when people with money and wanting reliability fitted steel cranks to Austin Seven engines some members objected. They are not an issue now.

I think, if I remember, the 750 club had an issue with the shortage of Austin engines, and deemed the Reliant engine a suitable replacement. I don't think you can compare series Land Rovers with Austin 7's though, you don't see that many Austins sitting in farmers hedges..:rolleyes:
There are plenty of series Land Rovers and parts around, all you need do is look. It's certainly not got to the point where engines etc are scarce and unobtainable.
I found, recently an American website selling only genuine LR parts, and also have 60 series for breaking:eek::eek:, bastids have all the good bits..:mad:

PS. If you're in the 750 club, you probably know or know of a great friend of mine, he lives in Dartford :D
 
My first accident was in a series 3 at the age of 2. it got me into land rovers ever since. If i could have afforded to sort it out and run it on a daily basis i would. i have my disco now and still love my Land rovers. if i could afford to have a series 3 and run it every day i would put a new engine in it purely down to the milage i do on a daily basis. but if it was just a local run around standard all the way on the engine front!!!
 
Why on earth does almost everyone on these threads about "Series" ... the clue is in the title ... want to bastardise them by sticking non-original engines in them?

I have had a number of Series from a 1954 through to a late Series 3, and would never have dreamed of sticking anything other than original bit in them.

How can you say that something is a Series I when you've stuck a V8 into it??

Let's have some real Series stuff! Please!!

so if i fit a land rover discovery 200tdi engine into a s111 have i bastardised the s111 as the engine is still land rover ;)

My is pretty much all original and I love it! Only thing that's from a different car are the seats, which I think I'll change soon.

I honestly don't find mine uncomfortable and the lack of speed really doesn't bother me.
 
The second you replace a nut or bolt on a Series it aint original. Rivet counters can fook orf. Its your Landy, do what you wanna do.
