have no oil light so i assume the pressures ok, any other way of testing oil pressure ? & it turns over & starts perfectly like it always has

You have to fit an oil pressure gauge I guess. Can you see any oil running about if you run it with oil cap off?

there was the usual amount of oil about when i removed the rocker cover so its definatly getting to the top

Yeah you don't know if it's getting good enough pressure though, big ends only tend to go due to lack of oil pressure or over revving. I would doubt its the latter?

No i treat the engine with the upmost respect always keep the revs low till i feel heat out of the heater, dont ever rev above 3000 as its not been needed, as its always pulled really well, but i have been putting 15/40 in it & that possibly hasent helped, will check oil circulation tmrw and thinking of maybe taking the sump off & having a peep inside - you never know it may be loose bolts on the bottom end somewhere ????? but i understand its an axle out job & i only have a drive & no ramp etc so should be fun !
Its been serviced extremely regular over its life too so im amazed if its dead at 185 k
but whenever ive had an engine sound this unhealthy in the past its never been good lol
Ive resigned meself to the fact that i need a new engine so partly stripping it to have a look wont hurt but I need to be able to make it driveable again if poss to get it to the place where the engine will be changed and why take the axle n all out just to confirm its wrecked !!!! Would rather try to find a way of diagnosing without having to remove axles etc, appreciate all the advice as always !

I'd be very happy with 15w40 in a 200tdi tbh, maybe it masked a weak pump though?

If you jack the chassis up nice and high there will be enough room under the engine to drop the sump, then you can see what's up.

Yes, as with any big end failure it's proper nasty listening to it. Try not to run it though.

Jack the chassis, prop it safely and then get the sump off and see. You should be able to feel play in the big ends if theres major trouble, otherwise you might have to remove the rod end caps. Make sure you don't mix them up! Get a haynes!

I was pretty sure it wasent turbo they normally scream horribly or drink all yur oil when they fail !
The thump also gives it away

Thought these 200 tdi,s were sposed to be bombproof !
This one was put together on a friday or the monday after the works party i assume

Dude its done 185000 miles thats like 5 times round the world or some **** who knows how it was treated before you got it

I know i had that happen on an astavan td once - had to drive it to a guy who was buying it & it drank 5 litres of oil in 15 miles, actually quite a scary experience as the only way to stop it is to stall in top gear - the ppl behind werent chuffed either ! lol
