Hi Guys looking for some info that some one can help me with im current doing up my disco 1 up (pictures to follow soon)it has 235-85-16 tyres on it at the moment with a 2 inch lift i was planning on getting the maxxis Creepy Crawlers 37-12.5-16 i was also going to get 38mm wheel spacers and 2 inch spring spacers am i just dreaming here or can this be done i know i will have to put extended brake hoses on but they look a bit dated any way so i was going to change them for piece of mind any advice would be helpful as i am still learning about these monsters

Are those 37" tyres? If so, you'll need a hefty lift and that may include a body lift as well. Bit pointless tbh. Just fit some smaller more aggressive special track style tyres.

This is the sort of question there is loads on the web about so be prepared to not get much in the way of a response. Put a few pics up.
 
You had a 29" tyre as std, went to a 32" tyre and now another leap to 37", might want to think about changing the gearing in the diffs and fitting some HD shafts and CVs whilst you're at it, although it depends on how you drive it but those tyres will snap shafts like twigs, next up will be your steering box :eek:

There is a lot more to it than getting them to physically fit in and onto the axles.

A rather large body lift will get them in, but you might want to think about splaying the front inner arches and deepening the rear arches as the tyres will be rubbing the tops at any articulation.

It can all be done, look at the heavily modded trials and challenge vehicles. But running that sort of tyre will alter your gearing quite a bit, and put a lot more load on drivetrain, steering etc. than the designer intended, so you may well need to modify other components too. And it will not improve your road handling or fuel economy.

If you will use the vehicle for heavy off-roading, pay and play, trials, winch challenge etc. it will be worth doing this. If your use is everyday, 90%+ on road, like most users, it might be cheaper to stay with standard tyres or a size or two over.
 
Thanks for the advice guys like i said im only planning on using it for the weekend for a bit of fun its not going to be a daily driver i think the ~V8 petrol Engine will kill me enough here is a few pictures of it as it is now

You should get about 18-22 mpg driven gently on the road, maybe a bit less with big tyres. No idea what it would do off-roading, I only use mine for towing, and occasionally if I need to carry a few people.

Personally I think you'll be lucky to get 15mpg on the road with big tyres. Don't forget there's handling compromises when you jack it all up. Manouevering a top heavy disco is noticeably trickier than standard. There's not many places I can't go with my standard set up with special track tyres!

I agree completely, I have standard size tyres on my own disco, and I did say the mileage would decrease with the bigger tyres.:)

None of my landies have ever been lifted, or had huge tyres, maybe one or two sizes over stock at most. And they have always been very capable off road, farm and forest offer testing terrain. :D

The big tyres are great if you need extra ground clearance, or to get through deep mud. And sometimes I do meet these conditions, but more often I meet low branches, steep side slopes, stuff like that, where the big tyres are a disadvantage.

They are pretty essential if you want to drive in modded trials, winch challenge, etc. though, but tbh, I don't! ;):D
 
I don't see the point in massive tyres and tons of lift. I've done most lanes in Lancashire, Cumbria and Yorkshire, and I've only once failed to get up something and had to use a winch, and that was due to a snapped Panhard Rod.. Lifting, extended hoses, cranked arms, huge tyres and arch cutting just to get through that muddy puddle? Seems daft to me.. Disco looks good, I like a nice 3 door, especially with 8 cylinders!

I can perfectly understand where you guys are coming from. :)

Agree, if that is the type of driving you want to do. that is the way to go! :)

I was just pointing out that for the average user, those tyre may be more trouble than they are worth.

Never had any portal axle landies, unimogs have them, and they are very capable indeed. Make sure you post some pics if you do get them! ;) :D

Yea fair enough on the road my tyres are awful :eek: definitely need to think ahead in the wet with them on.

Off road they are ace though :D But that's what it's all about for me.

Would love portals. Think you can buy bolt on ones for rover axles! Seen somewhere on here or maybe another forum about it. Definitely be a lot more capable.

I think I have read about the bolt on portal axles too, I cant remember whether it was a one off project, or commercially available.

They may be good for diff clearance, but could make life a bit tricky on steep sideslopes ;), and I shouldn't think they will make your road handling any better! :eek: :D

I wouldn't consider the tyres you have there as vastly oversized anyway, and they don't stick out too far sideways, which is a real probem in tight spots!

It's mostly clay underneath. And that was coming out of a very steep trough. The pics don't do it justice really. And I have my custom made 6mm thick diff pan welded on. So don't mind hitting things harder than normal.

The ruts were very deep too.

Portals or lockers would have definitely helped.

Still was a good day and if I wasn't getting stuck it'd get boring pretty quick!

No tyres are only 255 so mot massively wide. But do want some larger offset modulars :eek:

As more road handling it'll be alright it's only normally driven to play days anyway. :)
